Hey, for those of you interested, I wrote a paper on what I learned about the diversity of autism from research I conducted on it - I read a kid's fiction book, conducted an interview with a woman from my church who has a son that has Sensory Processing Disorder and possibly Asperger's and is on the high end of the spectrum, watched a documentary about Asperger's, and recalled experiences I had with the boy from my church when he was in my group at Bible School last summer. If any of you would like to read my paper please PM me your email address and I can send it to you. The paper was for my diversity ed class. It's about 10 pages and I got a 38 out of 40 on it!

Have any of you read "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult? I downloaded it to my new Kindle and am reading it and was curious as to how representative it was or wasn't of a young man with Aspergers.

The young man was a recognizable Aspie, but there are as many variations among Aspies as with any group, e.g. model train collectors; kite flyers; bulldog breeders, Beatle fans, etc.
One thing that was eye catching was that he would record and watch his favorite detective show repeatedly, knowing damn good and well these were reruns and not going to change and yet he felt he'd see a different ending. I don't know ANY Aspie, adult or child who believes something that is so glaringly contrary to facts and evidence.

i have not read this whole thread...but was wondering did y'all see the 60 minutes report about autism and the ipad on TV earlier this fall? it was amazing how some of the people adults and children interacted using the ipad.
this story makes me happy for this young man and hope it can be developed to help more people and their parents and caregivers...
there are more vids on you tube , but having a time sorting them out.
i pray for all children to be able to connect..

In some cases, Facilitated Communication (FC) has been used successfully. Tito, author of several books, his most famous being "The Mind Tree" has a famous mother as well. Soma has written a book about her communication method that worked with her son and with various clients. She's a very interesting person.

I have a question. I teach Sunday school for teenagers. One of the students has aspergers and ADHD. In the past teachers had problems with him. He talks out of turn and sometimes says rude things to others. We try to remind him to stop doing it, but he still does it. Should I talk to his parents about it?

It can't hurt. Perhaps they might have some helpful insights or suggestions. If they know what their son is doing in Sunday School, then they can be in a good position to help him and you.

Yes! It's adorable. It's so cool to see the many types of kids with autism. Some are more social than others, but they all have challenges. I really feel for the parents. I know how hard it is to worry about your child.
