And In The End... Powerful New Play!
I just returned to NYC from Sydney, Australia where I had the pleasure of catching a powerful new play about John, entitled And in the End (The Death and Life of John Lennon) at the Parade Theatre in Kensington. It's got a fantastic cast; Valentine Pelka (who was Kronos in the Highlander series) as Lennon was mesmorizing. Great supporting actors too who play a variety of characters. Opens with the gunshots... Lennon goes through the five stages of death (based on the Kubler-Ross book "On Death and Dying"). Quite a brilliant concept tackled by writer/director, Alexander Marshall. The show contained no Lennon or Beatles songs, but to tell you the truth, I didn't miss them. The writing and performances were so gripping and revealing; besides we already know the songs. This show truly captured my attention, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is going to be 'down under' in the next few weeks. I was wondering if anyone else has seen it and/or if they know if it has plans to come to the states. They've got a pretty neat website too: www.andintheend.com
Check it out!

I have friends who just saw this in Australia. And other friends who saw it in Edinborough at Fringe Fest in 2004. It is definitely NOT the play that was on
Broadway for a few weeks in Summer 2005. My friends described it to me as a very serious play about John Lennon as the icon for someone looking at ALL of our
lives in the 20 Century. They told me it does not have songs, which is fine with me, because you can see the deep meanings through his life. Anyway, I am new to
this forum, and my usual interests are Beatles trading cards, Beatles ties and scarves, and the like, but this is a very important topic. We are only realizing now how important John Lennon was to popular culture, to the music/ entertainment business generally and a play like this will give us greater insights deep into his character. I will not travel to Australia- but maybe these guys will get closer to where I live, not far from Broadway.

And in the End
[font=Georgia]I was lucky enough to be in Edinburgh in August '04 for the Fringe Festival. What a FAB time it was! I saw eight different shows in six days (what a theatrical smorgasbord)! Made certain I saw "And in the End." Twice, actually. A very moving show. Very unlike any of the tribute shows (thank goodness!!). Valentine Pelka was amazing ... one forgot it wasn't really John up there on the stage. I've been checking the show's Web site periodically for updates -- hoping to see it going to Broadway (so I could indulge in another theatrical smorgasbord). Looks like Australia's first. Unfortunately I can't go that far right now (though I've wanted to visit Australia for a long time ... maybe it first started with seeing koalas but it may have been solidified by the Beatles in Australia book!). I've voted for my choice of poster for the Australian run of the show -- you can, too: http://www.andintheend.com/posters.php. And I'll keep checking the site to know when to plan a trip to New York City![FONT]

Like Fab4Fan4Life said, in Edinburgh it was "A very moving show". All I know is that the production in Australia moved me - to tears. Very specialized laser effects too, which would not be possible at the Edinburgh Festival. BarryPark mentioned above, you can "see the deep meanings through his life". I saw Lennon the Musical in S.F. and depsite the fact that it had the music, it was like watching Lennon on "Love Boat"; very homognized and you didn't get to see his true nature. We've got the albums and CDs. With "And in the End" you get to see how a great artist wrestled with his own personal demons to achieve artistic excellence... and find himself. Thanks Fab4Fan4Life for letting us know about the poster contest. I just went back to the website and voted. It's pretty cool. Tell your friends! Great artwork by Shannon. www.andintheend.com/posters.php
