It's 5 Years...
FPSOT, Where does the quote in your lead post come from? In reading Eric Idle's moving comments elsewhere in this forum, it certainly appears he was also present at George's passing.

I remember what I was doing when I heard the news. I was cooking dinner and listening to the radio. The DJ announced his death and put on the song "I've got my mind set on you". Dispite the fact that it was a bouncy tune, I started to cry. My husband came home and said, "Honey did you just hear...?". He saw my tears and knew that I knew. He held me for a moment.
Later I got the Time magazine issue with George on the cover. I still have it.

I feel bad that I couldn't remember which day he passed. I wasn't a Beatle fan when he died five years ago but I feel I've known him far longer. George has always been my favorite Beatle.
Here's one of the very few great covers of The Beatles, appropriate enough it's a ukelele version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Beautiful.

Oh, how I miss George. Such a wonderful human being, and I will never stop missing him.
I remember exactly where I was when I found out the news. I had a day off that day and had slept in. My Mom had called the house, waking me up, and told me the news over the phone. I just couldn't believe it. Now, 5 years later, I still can't.

I wore black, lit candles and listened to his music.
And tried to be happy on my birthday...
It's hard to have a birthday that day. I can't really enjoy it.
I love George so much it's impossible to even try to say how much. He's just so... Wonderful. A lovely human being.
I miss him in my life.
Still, I know he's there somwhere...
Now I'm getting all emotional, I have to stop. I can't deal with it...

This was the first magazine I got with the cover story. The editor's page (I guess it was) was what put me away. I boo-hoo-ed for a week, as if someone in my family had passed. I didn't realize til then how much he had meant to me. His music had been around all my life, and I had a memory for each of his solo songs that I had heard up to that time--from grade school to places I worked and people I knew. He didn't have that many singles out, not as many as Paul, but when he did have one out, it was so unique and special, it was an event.
