Biggest Beatles sale yet may top cash chart

John Lennon's baby grand piano.

ONE of the biggest batches of Beatles-related material is expected to fetch millions of pounds at a major auction of rock ‘n’roll memorabilia in the United States next week.

And Liverpool-based bidders will be able to make their own bids at the auction in Scotsdale, Arizona on Monday, January 15 as it will be live online via the internet.

Among the lots are:

* George Harrison’s original handwritten lyrics to his classic song While My Guitar Gently Weeps, on a single sheet of paper and featuring lines not featured on the final version recorded for the Beatles’ “White” album. On the reverse are the lyrics to Hey Jude, in the hand of the Beatles’ road manager Mal Evans.

* A 1917 Brambach baby grand piano owned and played by John Lennon. It was based at John and Yoko’s picturesque retreat in Long Island, New York and believed to have been used to compose some of Lennon’s last works such as Starting Over and Woman, released in 1980 – the year of his murder.

* The five-page orchestral musical score for While My Guitar Gently Weeps written and arranged by Sir George Martin especially for last year’s Love album.

It was the only “new piece” of music used on the compilation, it is signed by Sir George, the two remaining Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Yoko and George’s widow Olivia. It is considered to be the last ever piece of Beatles memorabilia.

The earliest known signatures of Lennon and McCartney inscribed together in a Liverpool guest book dated December 22, 1958 with the signature of John's future wife Cynthia Powell, on a separate page.

* A watercolour of a bird in a tree created by an 11-year-old Lennon in June 1952. It is signed and dated by the artist and is probably the earliest example of a Lennon signature.

* A handwritten letter from Lennon dated 1973 concerning his band Elephants Memory.

* A signed copy of Lennon’s Walls and Bridges album with the inscription: “To Bernie, keep your pants on. John Lennon.”

The auction is being organised by British-based auction house Cooper Auctions in co-operation with US auctioneers Barrett- Jackson.

“The Beatles were massive then and they’re massive now – Americans especially are still crazy about them,” said Cooper Auctions founder Louise Cooper.

“When we sold the original lyrics to All You Need Is Love for 1.3m dollars last year it set the standard and really slapped people in the face about how important and valuable this material is. They are the new antiques and the crazy thing about The Beatles is that the interest just continues to grow.’’

Cooper has placed an estimate of between £260,000 and £400,000 on the Harrison lyrics while Lennon’s piano “may even fetch two million bucks – the sky’s the limit on top drawer pieces.”

The auction begins at half past midnight GMT on Tuesday, January 16. To bid “live”, on the internet local bidders will have to register at least 48 hours beforehand by going to the website www.cooperowen.com

George wrote at random – at his parents’ home

* GEORGE HARRISON was visiting his parents’ home in Warrington when he first began writing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. He’d been reading the I Ching – the book of changes – which gave him the idea of writing a song based on the first thing he saw on opening a book. He picked one at random, saw the words “gently weeps” and began writing.

* At the bottom of the Weeps manuscript, Harris- on has added the comment “The band leader said he ain’t playin’ no more” – a clear reference to the troubled atmosphere in the studio prior to the recording of the White album. Mal Evans’ transcription of McCartney’s Hey Jude, written on the other side, is believed to have been for use by one of the band members during recording.

* Previously, All You Need Is Love lyrics sold for $1.3m and Lennon's yellow glasses went for $111,250; his tunic, the prototype for Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, raised $204,700.

Cool. Makes me wish I could afford these things.
