Cavern Club
Hi my name is Neil and I am a new member to this forum. Just thought I would start this thread as having read some of the posts with regards to the Cavern Club. The 'original' Cavern Club is not a car park and it wasn't knocked down in 1973 it was filled in. The 'original' club was excavated in 1982, it was then knocked down due to unsafe foundations. The 'original' bricks were taken away and treated and used to re-build the club using the same dimensions and floor plan. The Club that stands today is on 75% of the original site and has the same address of 8-10 Mathew Street, the only difference is the 'new' club is 8 foot lower and has been turned 90 degrees so it runs parallel with Mathew Street. The car park next door which people mistake as being the site of the 'original' Cavern has the address 4-6 Mathew Street so therefore cannot be the 'original site'.

one day people will listen.
I just love to spend my time trying to correct all the false stories written about the Cavern club.
Just because it is written in a newspaper it doesn't mean it is true. I have had the pleasure of working in the club for over 10 years and being a tour guide for over 3 years, it is more than just a job believe me. the amount of stories written about the location of the cavern is amazing. we do actually have photo evidence of the Exact spot on which the door stood.
There is no car park on the original site. There is no restaurant on the original site. There is in fact a club on the original site. and funny enough its still called the cavern club ' the most famous club in the world'.
If anyone would like anymore info about the facts feel free to contact me personally or visit the cavern website.
Neil.

Hi Neil.
If it helps I have an old photos of some people standing outside the Cavern in 1964. On the left of them there's a 'Kellys' sign with the address 8-10 Mathew St under it and on the right there's a poster with the acts from around August time.
tell me if you'd like a copy. :-)

I went down there last summer, but it was so unbeliveable stiflingly hot that I thought for sure I'd pass out, so we left. Really wanted to see the show down there, but I didn't think it was worth risking my health to do so. How do you survive down there? You must drink buckets of water.

that would be great, thanks.
There is a photograph of the doorman at the time (Paddy Delaney) leaning on the door frame. The photo was taken from the inside of the club looking out onto the street, on the wall opposite the Cavern there is a line down the wall, the 8th brick up is half missing. It remains that way even to this day, where the original Cavern door stood is now our emergency exit. On John's birthday last year, Julia Baird unveiled a plaque on our door to finally put pay to all the misunderstandings.

I've been down in there and I agree - you need air conditioning or something. :-p
Or maybe some scantilly clad maidens with palmtree leaf fans?
(whoops...I didn't really edit this, Harb...I hit edit instead of quote...)

Yeah it wouldn't be the same. It's all part of the experience. I'm sure that tropic atmosphere is responsible for the infamous Cavern Flu though. (Also know as Convention Throat.)

Funny that, I thought Convention throat was caused by 24 hour drinking over seven days - well it is at Cavern City Tours anyway!

Ha ha, no I think the drinking actually combats it. The alcohol steralises your vocal chords.

Oh, come now...the Cavern as a Hooters? Honestly, Harb!
Welcome, Neil, your stories are interesting!! I've been to Liverpool twice and enjoyed my visits to the Cavern both times. Unfortunately I never saw a show there, though...
