Smile George Fest 2014

Last night was Dhani's George Fest! We've had some discussion on the news thread, but this definitely deserves it's own thread.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to go... though I tried to! Tickets sold out instantly, mostly to scalpers. That was pretty terrible, but what can be done? Even when they switched venues, tickets sold again. I didn't even get a spot in the waiting room of ticket sales.

Dhani was on radio 100.3 before the show and that was so nice! He ended his show with Barnacle Bill the Sailor, which he said was George's all time favorite song. :) Dhani played songs and told which were special in particular to him. It was so, so nice to hear.

Some music form the show is up on Tube, while it lasts anyway.

Brian Wilson did a great job on My Sweet Lord-

At the end, I think they wanted to say the prayer, but it's tricky unless you're used to it, I think. So they tried to get Dhani up on stage but they instead ended it nicely another way.

gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇur gurur devo maheśvaraḥ,
guruḥ sākṣāt paraṁ brahma tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.

Oddly, I did hear that prayer (unexpectedly) this weekend at a yoga workshop! Thought of George, of course, when the prayer was offered up to Guruji Iyengar.

So great to hear all this love for George! My favorites were Dhani and Brian Wilson. :) But big applause to everyone!

A friend of mine who's a huge Weird Al fan (as am I) went--he said was pretty impressed with the music, which he was mostly unfamiliar with. Needless to say, my overly enthusiastic offer to recommend some GH stuff was met with a resounding "Uh.....that's ok."

I do wish that there was more attention given to the post-ATMP material, not just at this concert but in general. I feel like aside from "All Those Years Ago" and maybe a little bit of Cloud 9, the music George did in the last 30 years of his life is way too neglected. Granted, the Beatles are a hard act to follow, and ATMP is an absolute masterpiece, but there are so many gems on the later records. I'm just imagining Norah Jones doing "Can't Stop Thinking About You," or Beck doing "Simply Shady," or how about my beloved Kacey Musgraves tackling "That Which I Have Lost"?

I thought about you when Weird Al was announced. :) I remember you really like him.

I agree with you about wanting to hear more of George's less popular material. Nora doing "Can't Stop Thinking About You".... wow. That would be amazing!

I'd love to hear the Sweet Hollywaiians doing "Woman Don't You Cry for Me." Maybe Dave Edmonds could do "I Don't Want to Do It" and Nick Lowe for "The Pirate Song." :)

Most of the stuff I love most is off the less popular albums!

I know, right? It's not that I don't love everything on ATMP but these days I'm more likely to listen to the alternate Early Takes versions of those songs than turn to the album itself. If I'm pulling out an actual George album to listen to, it's most likely going to be Dark Horse or Somewhere in England.

I'm assigning myself a new project--the ultimate fantasy George Harrison tribute album. Friends, contemporaries, and modern artists who I think could pull off a certain George track in a unique and compelling fashion. Hey, there's a pretty awesome (and A-list) Paul McCartney tribute album coming out next month so why not?
