'Lucy' in the Sky Dies...
Found here
LENNON'S LUCY IN THE SKY DIES
LUCY RICHARDSON, the inspiration behind THE BEATLES' hit LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS, died two weeks ago (01JUN05) following a two year cancer battle. She was 47.
Richardson, who became a successful art director on movies including CHOCOLAT (00) and THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS (04), was the subject of the 1967 song, despite popular belief the track was a thinly veiled reference to the drug LSD.
However, JOHN LENNON always insisted the song was based on a childhood painting by his then four-year-old son Julian, who had befriended the girl at school.
John explained in a 1975 interview, "Julian came in one day with a picture he painted about a school friend of his named Lucy.
"He had sketched some stars in the sky and called it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."
Richardson's sister MARY FOSTER says, "Lucy remembered the times when she would sit with Julian as he drew pictures.
"She was rather chuffed to realise she had inspired the song title."
Her loved ones sprinkled crystals over her grave in a touching nod to the song which was dedicated to her.

....*sniff* That is very sad.
Here's to her memory, and the picture, which of course inspired a work of greatness.

That is truly very heartbreaking. The gesture of her family spreading the crystals over her grave is so beautiful. She'll never be forgotten.

RIP Lucy. Another little piece of Beatledom slips away with your flight, but we remember you fondly.

I never knew that Elton John song was about a real person. A bit sad. At some point everyone associated with the fabs will be dead, including me. That's why it's time for a new Beatles. We need a musical revolution! Greats songs by people who won't die for a while about people who won't die for a while. All this death is a drag.

First time for everything...
The first time I heard it I was floating in our backyard swimming pool, the scent of Copperton vaporizing off my body, not a care in the world, a completely free teenage brain. I suddenly heard music coming from my brother's window.
I called up to him, "Bobby, what are you listening too?"
His face appeared like a moon through the window. "It's the new Beatle album." Suddenly his record player speakers were jammed into the window. "Listen!" he said.
The needle skipped across the vinyl, he cursed, and it landed on, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
I slid off the raft and swam over to the side, jumped up on the side, tilting my ear toward the window, thinking, this isn't anything like I've ever heard. It's so psychedelic.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone.
I remember everything about that moment. The sun glistening off the water, watching a leaf float by, an inquiring bee, the warm smell of concrete and suntan lotion.

That's a wonderful story, GG, a great memory you've got there.
How sad it is to hear about Lucy, though... so young to go. May you rest in peace, and know you won't be forgotten as part of the Beatles legacy.

re Lucy
Condolences to the family. The inspiration for Lennon's Lucy was,
to the best of my knowledge, another lady, still alive, closer to
Julian's age, the daughter of a friend.
