Default Today\'s Lennon Song Suggestion

John hasn't got one yet, so let's get it rolling;

Today my suggestion is

Imagine

Just because of all the misery in this lovely world.

One of John's best songs for it's simplicity and expression. Definitely a good one for all the troubles in the world.

Great Topic!

Is it just me or has Imagine become a standard?

Isn't a standard a song that has had many cover versions done of it? I haven't heard too many versions of Imagine, if any.

But if it isn't, maybe it should be!

Well, Savoy, I'm not sure what exactly constitutes a standard myself. I just thought: Imagine has to be something. EVERYONE knows it. (And I do emphasize on everyone there if that wasn't very clear.) I mean, I know people who consider it the Beatles song, even if it isn't a Beatles song. Imagine has to be something bigger than just a beautiful song.

It meant enough for Neil Young, one of my personal favorite songwriters, to cover it for the September 11th Tribute concert in memory of all those innocent people who lost their lives in that horrific event. And its been in countless movies, portrayed in several documentaries I have seen describing that era and its ideals, whether or not they have lived on.

Is it John's most well known song? I don't know. I always thought everyone knew A Hard Day's Night or Strawberry Fields or Lucy or I Want to Hold Your Hand (which I read in a Beatles song book is more predominately John's) or [name a Beatle John song here] just as well. But I could be wrong. So I'm just wondering...

I remember hearing somewhere that many people have thought of making it a National Anthem somewhere. Now that would be quite controvercial, to say the least.

IMHO, the greatest song ever recorded. Now for your viewing pleasure...

Imagine

© Lenono Music, Ltd.
John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try.
No hell below us,
Above us only sky.
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do.
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too.
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one.

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can.
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man.
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Nah, its beautiful and everything. But I think "Julia" should become a standard instead. That would be a hell of a standard, don't you think? Yeah...

I think I'm in the minority that "Imagine" has never been one of my favorite songs. Yeah, it sounds nice and has some nice ideas behind it, but it's SO ubiquitous. You just can't get away from it. I wouldn't even like my very favorite song in the whole wide world if I heard it as many times as I've heard "Imagine". Maybe if they put a moratorium on playing it for a couple years, I could like it again?

Today

Woman Is The Nigger Of The World

Another sort of 'Imagine' in fact, did not get the attention it should get.

Wonderful song.

Not one of my favorites by John, but it does show how women in general have been treated through the ages.

Woman is the Nigger of the World

© Lenono Music, Ltd.
John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...think about it.
Woman is the nigger of the world
Think about it...do something about it.

We make her paint her face and dance
If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us.
If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man,
While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us.

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with.
Woman is the slave of the slaves
Ah, yeah...better scream about it.

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen.
We tell her home is the only place she should be,
Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with.
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah...alright...hit it!

We insult her every day on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence.
When she's young we kill her will to be free,
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb.

Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...if you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with.
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream about it.

We make her paint her face and dance!
We make her paint her face and dance!
We make her paint her face and dance!
We make her paint her face and dance!
We make her paint her face and dance!
We make her paint her face and dance!

It's a little too strident for my taste, but he's got a point.

Hey, I've always loved WITNOTW. Nice women's lib song...John was very political at the time. Or, to say it better, he was touching base on many political issues. But this was close to him because he was originally a very chauvinistic, typical Liverpoolian male. You know, the woman has to stay at home and blah,blah...When he started realizing that women were much more than just beautiful faces that could nurture men and children, and seeing them as strong, determined, brilliant people (which they certainly are), he felt bad about his past beliefs and got some sense.

So he wrote this song. May not be everyone's favorite, but the message has always been resonant with me.

One of my favorites... especially when John starts yelling out the "We make her paint her face and dance" towards the end with those great, almost eery, strings. One of his best lines ever !

Pity about the "N" word, kind of puts the mockers on the song and has maybe put that track in a rather un-popular category for some, though we can be pretty sure John didn't mean anything racist by it.

Some of the best lines John ever wrote are in that one...

"Woman is the slave, to the slave"

"While telling her not to be so smart, we put her down for being so dumb"

How true, especially back then...

Great songs both but simpler than a message song (and perhpas more powerful because of its simplicity) is his mantra song "All You Need is Love". I know it's not one of his solo songs but I think it warrants a metion here. It tells us HOW we achieve the hopes of "Imagine" and equality between men, women and all races. The first line says it "There's nothing you can do that can't be done..." Since embracing that philosophy in my life I've been able to overcome some nasty situations and have achieved what I want when others thought it was simply impractical or impossible. And not to "line steal" from another great song of his, which is solo career ...Love IS the answer. I know that for sure! OK off the soap box back to work!-lol

I adore Woman! I'd have to say that's one of my top John songs. But for today, I'm in a Nobody Told Me kinda mood. That song really helps you deal with confusing times in your life, it shows you how to sit back and try to laugh at the situation.
"Strange days indeed"
