Default Pepper...Penny Lane...Strawberry Fields Forever

Quick poll...

I'm sure that most of you are aware of why "Strawberry fields forever" & "Penny Lane" were released as a single rather than be included on "Sgt. Pepper".

Stictly for arguments sake, which two songs would you have knocked off "Pepper" so that these two songs could have made it on to that album ?

Hard choice, but I say:
- "Lovely Rita"
- "Goog morning, good morning"

Don't get me wrong, I love those two songs

P.S.:
I might even go as so far to replace "When I'm 64" with "Only a Northern Song"...

"Within You Without You" is definitely gone. Everything else stays. Yeah, I know you said 2 songs, but I just can't do it.

Good topic, although my opinion is that the separation of those two songs were a good choice.

Those days, singles had a separate importancy to buyers, like myself.

I have come to know them as non-album songs and the Pepper album as it is.

Would not want to mix it, maybe I would have then, but now, no, just leave it. And knowing that Only a northern song comes from that period, it suits me fine on Yellow Submarine.

Now, ofcourse the Pepper album also has its weak spots, looking at it years later, but it was a concept album as it was called, would not know which to take out.

Certainly not within you, without you.

Let's try this big step... even tho the armony of Stg Pepper is unovertakeable (if you have that word eheh), well, I'll try to chose the two song I love less...

Good Morning Good Morning --> Penny Lane
and
Fixing A Hole --> Strawberry Fields

I know I'm in the minority here, but I would take off Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I really don't like that song.

I would take out "Within you without you" (definitely!!) and "Fixing a hole"...the´re the weakest songs of that album.

I would take out "A Day In The Life" and "Within You, Without You". Release them together with "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields" as an EP and forget about the rest of "Sgt Peppers".

But I do believe i'm the only one on this.

I would take out Fixing A Hole And Lovely Rita.
I also think" Within You Without You" is one of George's best songs.

I think, as FPSHOT, that the album was well conceived and, although Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane and Only A Northern Song were recorded during those sessions, they did not belong to the album as an entity, and now they're well known as the greatest single record ever released.

But, if you want to make me play on this I would take out "Lovely Rita" (nonsense lyrics) and "Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite" (John himself disliked the whole idea of this song).

"Within You Without You" contains some of George's greatest lyrics and it's also a beautiful, intrincate and underappreciated melody that totally belongs to the album, and it's one of its greatest songs, in my humble opinion.

Good topic ABCKO, but I think this really should be in the And Your Bird Can Sing forum since we're talking about songs and albums.

Boy that's a real mind-boggler! That whole album is just so damn tight.

Only things that come close to Strawberry Fields Forever are "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "She's Leaving Home."

But if you unplug and/or otherwise alter those selections, you definitely lose musical and lyrical continuity.

Mind you, we could just ADD those three songs to "Pepper" without deleting anything off...

It would make for a nice re-release, "Sgt. Pepper" with three bonus tracks...

-"Strawberry fields forever"
-"Penny lane"
-"Only a Northern song"

It would then be to each of us to program it to our liking on our CD players...

i don't know about that. Sgt. Peppers' is more of a mind trip than a sonic journey, as it is just the slightest bit "flat" in that regards. In other words the lyrics are an integral part of the album, and again you will hit a boiling point of sorts when it comes to overall album continuity, if you just start adding tracks to the final product IMHO.
