Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Which of these songs depicts Liverpool in your eyes when you listen to it?
My choice is Penny Lane, although both seem to have some drug influence, which is ok..

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Penny Lane I think depicts Liverpool to the world.
Strawberry Fields is more of a personal statement. Both great songs in their contrasting styles. that was one heck of a 45.

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Well, Penny Lane certainly depicts the Liverpool scene more. It's a definite piece of nostalgia.
Strawberry Fields Forever reminds me more of John's mind than a Liverpool area. Personally, I like Strawberry Fields better than Penny Lane.
I had a sub at my high school who was dissing the Beatles and said that Penny Lane was "a slum that makes the streets of New York City look good." Ugh! What a rude guy! No one asked him!

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">especially since Penny Lane is not a slum, and i don't think ever has been. and what's wrong with the streets of NYC anyway? sheesh, some people!

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
I think "Strawberry Fields" is definitely John's depiction of the area in another dimension he was trying to take the listener too..

While I prefer SFF in general, PL has a Liverpool feel to it.

I'm more a fan of "Strawberry Fields Forever," but I think "Penny Lane" depicts Liverpool better.

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Definitley Penny Lane. It makes me think of a little British "He likes to keep his fire engine clean, its a clean machine". I like Strawberry Fields better, but that makes me picture an open field with tall grass.

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Strawberry Fields Forever is more of a fantasy, more mythical. Penny Lane is more real, with real people and places. So I'd say Penny Lane.

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
Well, naturally Penny Lane is the choice for plain talk imagery. Like a realist painting of Liverpool from Paul's youthful experiences. However, the astounding places one can go within the painting that is Strawberry Fields...impressionistic is its style and overtly surreal is its tone. Oh to have been in the mind of John when this tune was creative seed. Did you guess?...I prefer the latter.

Re: Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
This question is a bit unbalanced because obviously Penny Lane's lyrics actually depicts people and places and Strawberry Fields depicts a state of mind - so it's not really fair.
Both are good songs.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I think it is fair question, we are talking two different personalities, each presents their take in their own style of the times, these responses are all in the eye of the beholder, they are both great songs too.
