I used to be more into that scene...trawling the local record shops and flippping through the record bins. The thrill of 'the hunt' and never knowing what you might find was a real rush for me. Some real serious gems were found that way. I used to do a lots of mail ordering from non-local places i could not get to, along with record collectors, and the like. As the shops closed around here i had to look elsewhere for new vinyl releases, primarily eBay. I still avidly insist on vinyl as my first choice for enjoying music throughly if a release is issued on that format.

One will eventually come my way....i am in no huge hurry really. I have the patience of a rock in some departments of my exsistance....

I'm not so sure why the band released a statement saying the vinyl was released!

You've maybe heard Fistful of Mercy's latest single "Father's Son" on the radio, and now Rolling Stone has exclusive footage of the new supergroup of Ben Harper, Dhani Harrison and Joseph Arthur in the studio working on the track. Watch as Fistful of Mercy tune their guitars, work on the lyrics, lay down the vocals and pinpoint their harmonies on "Father's Son" above. The band's debut album As I Call You Down is out on vinyl now, with a digital and CD release to follow October 5th.

Had to share this here...

Today was a rather amazing day for me, as a interesting set of 'coincidences' happened related to this Band.

After drawing a 'Fistful of Mercy' related image to share with other fans, i stopped over to the groups' official website and discovered a link that led me to a place that was selling the coveted VINYL i have been looking for. Hooray for indie record stores! So i finally found one......

...a few hours after that lovely happening, i went about my busines, and then later i stumbled over a stunning revelation on the same website - they added a date to the tour list and now i get to see them LIVE! I was so hoping for a gig in my area, and now i find out that yes, it IS happening!

So today was a amazing day full of surprises related to these guys.

All i can say is....WOW!

Delight, what great news on both counts!!! So glad you've found the vinyl AND you see Dhani in concert!!!! I hope you'll share a review with us when the time comes!!

30 Bones is so beautiful, as Restore Me, to name two. Things go round is Pepper-ish.

My vinyl arrived yesterday, so i had my own 'Fistful of Music' Party to celebrate the release. Spun it three times, and LOVED IT. This is definately the kind of music i can get into. Wonderful 'real' feel to it all...and not too overproduced that it feels like studio product to my ears. Absolutely wonderful. I really nice feel to it all....the live shows will be spectacular methinks. I can feel the communal vibes already.

After having heard the LP i am even MORE excited now to see them next month. I was of course excited regardless, but hearing how lovely the music is makes me even more thrilled at what is to come.

I will post a full review later on...but will note '30 Bones' is indeed a fantastic instrumental despite the somewhat odd title for such a glorious piece of music.

Oh..and i HIGHLY recommend tracking down the vinyl LP. The printed photos and the entire visual package within are of gorgeous quality. The LP also comes with a free download card so one can grab a digital version of the album offline at DropCards.com

Stunning debut....a real winner. One needs to wear their love beads while listening to this, as it has a charming 60's feel to it in some areas. BRILLANT and enveloping.

Fistful of Mercy with Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's son), Ben Harper and Joseph Arthur played a free show Tuesday at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, New Jersey.
A few people who were there sent us some notes about the show. Kris Tash, a big fan of the Beatles and George Harrison, said, "Fistful of Mercy put on an absolutely amazing show! They played for about 45 minutes, and did most of the songs from their new CD. The harmonies and the melodies were just absolutely outstanding and the guys were just so sweet and charming on stage. They had a lot of cute exchanges with each other and with the crowd, which was about 200 strong.

"We got there at 5 p.m. and were among the very first ones there, so we lucked out and got to stand right in front of where Dhani was playing!! He is just so like his dad, it's absolutely unbelievable... same looks, same face, same expression, same way his mouth tilts up on the side! He played guitar and he played piano, both of which he was really great at. He is a real musician!"

Bob Gannon, who was also there, told us, "I had not heard any of the songs prior to the performance so I went in blind. I must admit that I went in with not the best expectations but to my surprise, the performance and the songs were quite good. First thing that stands out are the great harmony vocals. All three singers take turns during the songs and all three are obviously passionate with this project that spurred from friendships made.

"The album was written and recorded in three days. I didn't keep count but I believe that they played the whole album. They brought Jessy Greene with them who plays the violin on the album. Dhani played guitars and keyboards and the three have a great rapport with each other."

Kris Tash said that following the show, the band signed CDs and albums for everyone in attendance. "We were at the back of the line since we were at the front for the show and it took a good hour of standing in line til we got in. But oh boy, even after all that time, the guys were just so nice and charming!"

Marie Lacey, who was also there, said "(Dhani) was very sweet and engaging, looked in your eyes when you spoke and really seemed to pay attention to what you were saying."

Bob Gannon ended his note saying, "They are doing some dates around the U.S. and I strongly recommend that you go see them. I listened to the album twice more on the way home and it is growing even more on me."

Yes, the vinyl is well worth investing in.

The quality of the printed cover, sleeve, and overall package as a whole is fabulous. Probably one of the better newer LP packages i have seen in a very long time ( and i have seen very little!).

I posted a rather long winded review on another forum...permit me to share it here for those interested -

Impressions i have regarding the great album..CONTAINS SPOILERS!
Do not read below if you wish to be pleasently surprised while listeing to the album on your own!

I have listened to the album three times now, and have to say it is simply marvelous in so many ways. Some wonderful acoustic vibes..with some classical influences, interesting vocals, and a smooth 'feel good' feeling to the entire effort. A absolute winner....and it makes one even more exicted about seeing them perform these peices LIVE.

Definately get yourself to a gig if you can...this will be quite a experience!

All nine tracks are quite nice, and meld together rather nicely. Many of the tunes sound similar ( as in, primarily acoustic at it's core) with some wonderful additons and overlays of other instruments. The violin in particular is very welcome. Some nice slide guitar work and of course very nicely done guitars all around. The one instrumental peice ( '30 Bones') is fantastic. Grammy material for sure. A gem!

The tracks have a very nice feel to them...a great 60's vibe at some points.....and it all sounds very 'real' and not overly produced. My impressions of tracks, in order, after my first three listens -

'In Vain or True' -
First heard in a early form at thenewno2's performance at Lollapalooza this Summer, the album version is a excellent opening track. Sets the tone for what is to come, and gets you interested. A nice way to start. Really dig the acoustics.


'I Don't Want to Waste Your Time' -
Another decent tune, though on my second play-through i decided there were other tracks i enjoyed more. Similar acoustic vibe but this time with some repetitive lyrics. I noticed this with a couple of songs...but this does not nessesarily mean something negative to be held against the composition.

'As I Call You Down' -
Awesome. I love it. Great lyrics and a wonderful sound that just mellows you out into a nice place to be musicially. A winning cut.

'Father's Son' -
Some insightful lyrics provide a interesting story, as the music turns in a different direction. Get ready for a hoedown..and get ready to clap those hands...it is hard to sit still and listen to this jaunty melody.

'Fistful of Mercy' -
The track that named the group, the song is rather fitting. One of my faves on the album, it is another winner. Similar acoustic vibes with come pleasing ear candy ( love the arrangment) and the lyrics have a reflective meaning. Well done!

'30 Bones' -
A absolutely gorgeous arrangement, this charming instrumental peice is utterly wonderful. Grammy material, for sure. A fantastic peice, one of my top picks on this albums full of so many great efforts.

'Restore Me' -
Another winner for me, just loving it.

'Things Go 'Round'
Another reflective tune, this time with some themes that may be familar to some readers here.
Interesting arrangement, and another tune that breaks away from the previous assortment of feel-good acoustic peices earlier on. Nice.

'With Whom You Belong' -
A great way to wrap up the listening experience...this tune is almost anthem-like in how it makes it's statement and repeats it until the albums end. Another song that uses a few repetitive bars from the lyrics to drive home the expressed message. After hearing this the third time around, i could not get the chorus melody out of my head! Another big favourite....really like this one a lot.

Overall, i am definately not dissapointed in any way, shape of form. It is even better then i was expecting, and i absolutely love the feel-good 'real' vibe to the music. The acoustic sound and the harmonies created by the three of them singing is marvelous. What i also liked is that on a couple of their songs, they took turns singing lead vocals. I always enjoyed hearing other bands do this for certain songs ( Queen's 'Let Me Live' immediately springs to mind as a example of this...) and i was happy to hear the technique being used on this album too. Just brill. I am thrilled.

I listened to the vinyl LP version of the album, and i have to say it sounded fantastic. As a vinyl fan, i find the sound better anyway..but this album sounded particularly good to my ears. The LP package is gorgeous...with top drawer quality. The sleeve is printed nicely on excellent quality stock, and the inner sleeve has some handsome printing of it's own. The colour reproductions of the various photos are a nice plus, not to mention the insert - a plastic card to be used on DropCards.com for a free download of the entire album. Another big plus was the vinyl record itself, which was THICK and heavy...just the way us vinyl fans love em'! The cool 'Goat Logo' image is used as the record labels....nice touch, boys!

Serious vinyl fans will be VERY very happy with this ....the entire package as a whole is simply stunning and well worth the investment. If you can track down this album on vinyl, do not hesitate to purchase it! You will not be sorry!

At some point i will find more to rave about with this album...but until then i am going to go back and listen to it all over again. I suggest you do too.....

Fantastic....great to hear they were enjoyed.
One has to wonder what FoM has planned for the upcoming concert dates. The album is only 9 tracks long...so it makes me curious as to what ELSE they may decide to play.
No no no...i am NOT talking about 'B tunes'....
I am thinking perhaps each of them will play a song from their own solo works. Joe, Ben, and Dhani all have material they could tap into. Most concerts go for about an hour and a half, sometimes 2 full hours...so the thought has crossed my mind as to what else may be on the evenings' playlist.

Of course if they wish to play for 45 mintues and spend the rest of the time hanging out with the fans...hey...that is okay too!!

I can relate to this comment, as this is exactly the position i was in last year when i first saw thenewno2 live. I had no clue, and knew none of their music...but the gig they did near me won me over ten fold. I was so glad i went with a open mind, and 'blind'....it made it all the more exciting.

Well we only have a couple of weeks to go before the West Coast leg of the tour starts Stateside....

...who here is planning on attending a Show?

Well, those lucky souls out in Seattle get the first glimpse of FoM on Tour....as the kickoff is on the 9th!

I am really looking forward to the shows....and also all the forthcoming photos!

I really would love to go... I just cannot afford to go to concerts right now. Maybe the group will give a free concert sometime? Then I will be there for sure! :)

I hope those going will post their experiences/impressions and photos!
