Default Heard First Beatles Song in U.S.--Where/When???

Hello everybody...

I heard the very first Beatles song ever played on radio in the United States.
(As a group--not a back-up act)

Which song did I hear?

What radio station was I listening to?

What city was I in?

What Label Was the Song On?

Bonus Question:

In what two week period only could this
have taken place?

First of all, welcome to our forums! I'm totally guessing here...

The first song played on the radio was "She Loves You." I think it was on that Swan label, but I have no idea about the DJ. It was probably late 1963, possibly in Detroit? I'm sure somebody else will have all the right answers in an hour or two.

Welcome to Beatlelinks, Beatles65! Be sure to check out what goes on in What Goes On.

As for your question, the best I've been able to find so far is that "Please Please Me" was issued as a single on the Vee Jay label February 25, 1963. Looks like this was the first American single issued by the Beatles themselves (as opposed to backing Tony Sheridan), but so far I can't confirm if it was actually the first Beatles single to get U.S. radio airplay. If I find out more, I'll post it -- assuming someone else doesn't beat me to it first!

Welcome to Beatlelinks, Beatle65. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Since "Please Please Me" did not receive much airplay, I'll say that the song was "From Me To You", released May 27, 1963 on the VeeJay label - #522. You probably were in NYC listening to WABC.

Footnote: "From Me To You" was released earlier in Nov.-Dec. 1962. This version was done by Del Shannon.

Isn't it so, that in USA actually My Bonnie was the first release. That is includedin the question.

Then came Please Please Me/Ask me why, VeeJay 498, Febr. 25, 1963.

Beatle People!!!...

You've zeroed in on the song and label...

It was "Please Please Me" which VeeJay Records picked up to release as a single after Capitol turned it down...

And you've got the dates--it was the last week of February and first week of March 1963...

You've even got the city--Chicago--home of VeeJay Records...but the station??? you got it wrong so far...there's only one solid possibility in 1963 Chicago...

You're the President of VeeJay Records and you really like this Beattles [sic] group you've just signed...and you want the record to be heard not only in Chicago, but in 42 states at one time on a 50,000 watt clear channel am pop music powerhouse--so you take a walk a few blocks in downtown Chicago--and bring it to the music director and tell him it's really special, and won't he listen and give it a spin on the air...what is the only station this could be???

BONUS BONUS QUESTION: Who is the music director at the time with such vision for what is happening in pop music, that not only does he play it and encourages the other DJ's to play it...but he starts a fan club for this unheard of group?

Well...looks like you've given up so I am going to tell you.

The station was WLS-am 890 on the dial. It is now a talk station. It was the ONLY Top-40 Pop station anybody listened to from 1959--1966 in Chicago, until it had a challenger--WCFL in 1966.

WLS made more songs become "hits" nationwide than WABC in New York. If it got played on WLS...it had a very good chance it was going to be picked up by every other pop station. When you are heard in over 40 states at nighttime, those things happen.

The Music Director/DJ who was handed "Please, Please Me" by VeeJay, liked it and put into rotation on the station was the legendary Art Roberts. And then he started the fan club before anybody outside of Chicago even knew who the Beatles were.

I got lucky. I heard the first airplay of "Please, Please Me." I was home sick from school one day and had on WLS in the afternoon. I will always remember what the D.J. said paraphrased, "We're gonna try something different. There's this group of lads making a lot of noise in England. So we thought we'd give you a listen. This is The Beatles and Please Please Me"...

I thought the song was great. Unlike anything on the air. But I never heard it again...until January 1964. By then, nobody believed me when I told them I heard a Beatles song a year earlier! One song...one time stood out in my mind--the coming attractions of what was to come.

You can count me in. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was the first song I heard, back in Jan. 1964. I even saw them at the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 29, 1965.

Yes very interesting story Beatles65.
I am as old as anyone here on this board but I was more of an interested observer back in 1963 - not really a fan - so I guess I don't count.
