Default The Beatles--Take 1

this is a continuation of a discussion started in Legs' "What You're Burning" thread...but just to keep the place tidy i thought i'd move this side-topic.

we were discussing homemade mix CDs and a few of us decided that it'd be cool to make a collection of Take 1s/demos of as many songs as possible. a TRUE "1" album!

paranoic was kind enough came up with these known tracks:

"Here, I think, are most of the take #1's available, up until the end of 1965:
There's A Place
I Saw Her Standing There
Misery
Boys
Chains
Twist And Shout
From Me To You
Thank You Girl
One After 909
Open Message To Australia
I Want To Hold Your Hand
Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand (announcement only)
Long Tall Sally
A Hard Day's Night
You Know What To Do (demo take 1)
No Reply (demo take 1)
I'm A Loser
Mr. Moonlight
No Reply
She's A Woman
Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey!
I Feel Fine
Rock And Roll Music
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
Christmas Message/Speech
Another Girl
Yes It Is
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
If You've Got Trouble
That Means A Lot
Help!
I'm Down
Yesterday
Run For Your Life (announcement only)
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Day Tripper
If I Needed Someone
We Can Work It Out
I'm Looking Through You
What Goes On
Think For Yourself"

maybe everyone interested could share the research for this project (where to find the tracks). maybe we could even make a "tree" or "weed" of this and share the music!

think of other fun mix CD projects too!!

Good idea, onosideboards! I'd be happy to participate in a tree or something if enough people are interested.

Paranoiac made a great list - I wasn't even aware that some of those Take 1s were available! And I'd forgotten that most of the cover songs were only done in one take.

Building on that list, here's the Take 1s from 1966-1969 that I'm aware of. Many of these were already released on the Anthologies, but there's a few other good ones. I'm not sure how to classify the songs from "Let It Be," though!

Tomorrow Never Knows
Paperback Writer
I'm Only Sleeping
Strawberry Fields Forever
Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
Hello Goodbye
Revolution 1
Cry Baby Cry
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (demo)
Wild Honey Pie
I Will
I'm So Tired
Old Brown Shoe (demo)
All Things Must Pass (demo)
Something (demo)
Come Together
Come And Get It

And...finally, just to comment on EB's excellent list above: two demos, Old Brown Shoe and All Things Must Pass, were actually "take 2" recordings. Also, Revolution 1, despite its name, was in fact take 22. I'm So Tired, though Anthology 3 let us hear bits of takes 3, 6 and 9, take 1 is still unavailable. There! That should be most of them, hopefully. Please comment on any that may be missing and/or are incorrectly labelled. Also, let me know if there is any difficulty in locating the tracks themselves.

Wow, this idea is really coming together! The only problem I'd think of, and its picky, is some of these take ones are not really one take wonders, like Twist and Shout. The basic take (drums, bass, guitar, etc.) may have been take 1, but as with "Think For Yourself", if you've heard the chat recorded during this session, you'll know it took much more than one take! I know thats muddying things, and it can be confusing. Early on, every recording was a seperate take. But later, after 4 track, take #'ing ended with whatever basic track was getting the dubs. So I would dump the demos, not being 'actual' takes. But this oughta be interesting! What do you guys think?

Sounds like a great project. I have to dig into things more, the latest list looks pretty complete. For now the only question I have is what is "Open message to Austrialia" doing on the list, the only thing I have under that title are short greetings from the Beatles.

I wondered that too. Maybe cause thats one of the few tapes still exixting from the "With the Beatles" sessions? Were those messages even 'takes' per se?
The best sources for the early take ones would be "Please Me Do" and "One After 911", both on Silent Sea. For that matter, any of those Silent Sea CDs. "Hard Days and Nights" is good too.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I'm willing to take your word for it on "Old Brown Shoe," "All Things Must Pass," and "Revolution," but I'm not so sure about "I'm So Tired." I wasn't referring to the Anthology version - I've got a complete take (2:05) that's labeled "Take 1." But since I only have the MP3 file to go by, it could very possibly be mislabeled.

Does anyone know which takes of "I'm So Tired" are actually available? Couldn't find much info at Bootlegzone. I've also got a complete "Take 2" (2:30) that's in a higher key than the original!

You're right, the various speech bits don't really belong there, I just included them basically for sake of completeness. Some were slated takes (Australia, Christmas) and some weren't (Think For Yourself speech).

Here's a rundown of the sources/outtakes for "I'm So Tired"
Anthology 3: edit of takes 3/6/9
Control Room Monitor Mixes: isolated tracks 7 and 8 of the multi-track tape and other various mixes, all from take 14 (the released take)

The "I'm So Tired" tracks on Control Room Monitor Mixes all suffer speed-variation problems as you mentioned, and the "takes" you have labelled may in fact be the various "mixing" attempts, or some new remixes created with the availability of these tracks.

By eliminated the readily-available album tracks, demo takes and speech, the collection could probably fit on a single disc. Then, there's the whole issue of selecting a particular mix for these outtakes, but as a general rule, it might be best to stay away from the Anthology tracks whenever possible (as they were frequently subjected to additional editing/remixing). All of them should be easy to find on CD , with the probable exception of Golden Slumbers; for that you'll need the Anthology DVD set.

OK, so lets get a official track listing going, then we'll think about a cover design for this. A take off on Beatles 1 of some sort? We also should discuss how this will all happen. I'm not sure we need to start a tree sort of situation here, maybe...oh, I dont know. At least post the CD art here. How many of us would not be able to take the track listing and make our own? Or does someone REALLY want to go to the trouble of managing a tree? Further, does Jerry want that sorta thing starting here? Just some thoughts, ignore them freely.

wow, i go to sleep for the night and the project finishes...what a wonderful feeling! ( kidding )

so, we don't include demos--good idea. yes, i agree with that because they aren't really stuido takes. otherwise we'd have volumes of this project, one of which would be nearly all "the esher demos."

paranoiac: did you look through lewishohn's (sp?) recording sessions book to get this info?

yes joelcrowservo, we maybe don't have to actually tree it. so do we all fend for ourselves for finding the tracks? is someone already locating which boots our potential tracks are on?

The Unspurpassed Master Series by Yellow Dog
Studio 2 sessions at Abbey Road the 4 separet cd-s by Yellow Dog.
Anthology + has some takes 1's
The Alternate versions vol.1
The Alternate versions vol.2 also has some take 1's of songs.

Maybe someone can put it together, and then 'hide' it on WinMx where only WE could find it? Then when we all have it, delete it.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">good idea joel. but i know to some people (not me) any compression is a sin. however, since a tree is probably too much trouble, this will have to do.

i have a cable modem so i'm online all evening at least, so i could "host" the files. i did a winmx search earlier today and found quite a few take 1s. i'll search kazaa too. also, maybe some people could share their collections so i could download them to the central location.

any other ideas???

oh, and who are "we"? should we have a cut-off date for sign ups?

Who are 'we'? That made me laugh! Just sounded funny! Umm...well, lets just do limited sign ups on here, under this topic would be fine. And a cutoff date.. we'll figure that out later but a good idea. I think someone should be 'boss' of signups, and the actual signups should be done via email, just so someone can't just throw their name on here and then forget it. A bit more time invested with actual e-mailing. Then when the thing is together, we'll figure out what to hide it under. A code that doesnt mention "Beatles''. We also need to decide who is most graphically gifted. I could take a whack at a cover design. And What will we name our new little record label we're launching? So much fun, this..!

Sounds like a cool idea, although I'm not sure why you would want to include any released versions. Maybe stereo mixes of any take 1's from the first four LPs, and mono mixes of any take 1's from anything after that, just a suggestion. Most people don't have those on CD. I assume I have all of these tracks on CD somewhere in my collection, so let me know if you need any help compiling your list. Good luck.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">thanks so much for your offer, Jerry. you're right...we should not used the popular released versions.

since this is all my fault , i'm willing to be the contact person. so... EMAIL ME BY SUNDAY MIDNIGHT CENTRAL USA TIME JUNE 15TH TO BE INCLUDED IN THIS PROJECT. just use the email link below. and please include "the beatles take 1" in the subject line.

joel--that'd be great if you could come up with a cover design. and yes, someone think of a title!

do we have an offcial tracklisting yet? this may be a 2-disc set! further, maybe let's only include songs that actualy ended up on offcial releases (no "12 bar orginal," or "can you take me back"). let me know what you all think...

paranoiac: on your list, when you have a song listed as "released version," do you mean that the version on the album was recorded live, in one take? or just the basic track? i find it difficult to believe that "another girl" was recorded live. we don't want anything that appears on an EMI/Apple release.

I think this was already explained, but if they got a good basic version on the very first take, they would then just record the overdubs onto take 1, or a reduction of take 1. Even if they got only the drums right, they might have wiped everything else and started from there. Sometimes after several reductions and overdubs and edits, the released take would be take 4 or 5. But at least the basic track of take 1 was the released version. In any case, my opinion is that you shouldn't include any released versions. I mean, if you don't have the official CDs yet, why would you be reading this topic to get bootlegs of something you don't even have yet? Nothing is worse than listening to a new bootleg to discover that they threw on an official version, only so you can "compare" the two. But it's up to you guys.

Okay, hold on just a bit, I'm finalizing and crosschecking things. Should have a track listing quickly. But if anyone else has one, please, lets post at least two and then pick from that!
