LONDON - Yoko Ono picked up an award on behalf of John Lennon Monday and appeared to take a dig at his former bandmate, Paul McCartney

Accepting the special trophy at the Q Awards in London, Ono said Lennon had sometimes felt insecure about his songs, asking why "they always cover Paul's songs and never mine."

"I said, 'You're a good songwriter, it's not June with Spoon that you write. You're a good singer and most musicians are probably a little bit nervous about covering your songs,'" Ono said.

McCartney has sometimes clashed with Ono, the widow of Lennon, who was shot dead in New York in 1980 at the age of 40.

Ono objected when McCartney reversed the traditional "Lennon-McCartney" songwriting credit on a 2002 album. Ono's spokesman accused him of attempting to "rewrite history." McCartney had earlier complained that Ono would not let him take credit for "Yesterday," a song written entirely by McCartney.

Oasis took the best album trophy and the people's choice prize at the awards, sponsored by British music magazine Q. Coldplay were named best act in the world.

Maybe they just don't cover them because they don't want you to get a damn cent in royalties.

I am hoping she was adventerous and did stuff like Why Don't We Do It In The Road, Blue Jay Way, or Hey Bulldog.

I think she covered all Lennon songs or else Paul might get upset stating that she ruined his songs by singing them, even though he'd consider her cause to be a good one.

She's so nasty and mean. If Paul's stuff is "June with Spoon", then she doesn't want to know what I call her stuff. And the fact that musicians can do a cover of Paul's songs doesn't make it fluff. If that were the case, no one would cover John's Beatles songs like "Across the Universe" and "Don't Let Me Down". Yoko needs to learn to bite her lip a bit more. A lot of times she just comes off sounding mean, spiteful..... and uniformed.

Nah, not at all, Erin, it's just the press trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, hoping that her fans and Paul's fans will all work themselves into a frenzy and start duking it out so they can get a "story" out of it. I refuse to give in to such manipulation.

I don't see any dig at Paul. Why do people read stuff into things? Yoko was just telling John he did not write simple lyrics. How is that a dig at Paul? Unless people think Paul writes simple lyrics which he does not. Everyone knows Paul writes "silly love songs" lol

The media did blow Yoko's remarks somewhat out of proportion. But it shows me again that she's more than willing to crap on the Beatles to promote John Lennon.

I saw this on the newly-unveiled johnlennon.com The bio makes this statement: "But it was only after the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 that the figure the world now recognizes as "John Lennon" truly came into being."

Maybe so, but that "figure" would have been nothing if not for the accomplishments of 1962-1969, in cooperation with Ringo Starr and George Harrison, and, most crucially, Paul McCartney.

I don't think the dogs will be howling. I think they would be covering their ears whimpering with pain.
