George Harrison's son says Yellow Submarine holds bad childhood memories

Unlike most kids, who grew up loving the Beatles' song "Yellow Submarine," for George Harrison's son it was nothing short of torture. Harrison's 28-year-old son Dhani (pronounced Danny) told Britain's ES Magazine that "I was always brutally teased for being George Harrison's son. That was from the age of about four or five, before I even knew who he was. And for seven years people would follow me about school singing 'Yellow Submarine.' I still can't listen to that song to this day."

Dhani added that all of the Beatles' kids get along very well, saying that, "We're like an extended family. But the one I see most is probably Stella McCartney."

According to a 1987 George Harrison interview with Musician magazine, when Dhani was a child he asked him to teach him the opening riff to another Yellow Submarine song, "Hey Bulldog," on the piano.

Dhani graduated from Brown University in 2000 has launched a musical career fronting the new band Thenewno2 ("The New No Two"). Although the group is still working on their debut album, several songs and videos can be accessed through their website, thenewno2.com.

1) Huh ? Why would kids tease him about that ? I mean, if Dhani had been the son of a contreversialfugure (say, Harold Wilson) or of fringe-celeb (say, Tiny Tim), O.K.... I could see that... but to tease someone because he's the son of a Beatle ? Heck, at that age, had I had a class mate who's father was a famous singer, even one I didn't like, I'd either find it quite cool, or I would not care, but I don't see why I'd tease him about that ?

I mean, as far as I know, the Beatles never became the kind of band that people made fun of generaly, unlike, say, the Bee Gee's for a while when disco was scorned at.

2) Funny... as George neither wrote or sang that one... I wonder if Dhani told those kids that ?

Yeah, but would they have listened?

I know a woman who cannot stand "Birthday" and hates it as much as I do. Her reason is a little different - she was attacked and to this day whenever she hears it, it gives her flashbacks.

As for me, I just can't stand "Birthday" and doubt I ever could.

It is interesting that Dhani's classmates chose "Yellow Submarine" to hound him with during his boyhood. Good thing they didn't choose a Harrisong.

Yea, kids are dumb. Of course they'd sing "Yellow Submarine"...it's usually the first Beatle song children learn. Poor Dhani...but I'm sure those kids now feel like idiots! hhahaa

I'm surprised more kids haven't asked to be introduced to Olivia and George.

I'm sure the kids were just jealous. Besides, if any of Dhani's classmates thought he was "cool" and treated him well just because his dad was a Beatle, he probably wouldn't mention it in an interview, because then certain people would get the impression that he was boasting and label him a spoiled braggart. :p

Kids are mean. They tease about all sorts of things. Of course we would say "cool", but not everyone is a Beatles fan. And anything that's different about another kid, that gives others another opportunity to tease.

Growing up where I did, I knew kids on television. Some of the kids teased them for it & others thought it was cool. The teasing was more painful than the "cool" comments. It got to the point where some who left television wouldn't even talk about it any more because of the teasing. It's a very real thing.

Wow that is so cool to know that Dhani is in a band which perhapes may become very big.

As a child in the late 80's and some of early 90's I was teased for being a Beatles fan by kids singing that song to me too. For the longest time I never cared for that song because of it. It wasn't until years later that I started to enjoy singing it to little children.

Sad thing is that those kids who teased me for being a Beatles fan only knew the song Yellow Submarion, so they truly should have known better. I'm sure it was the same case when it came to the kids who teased Dhani.

Funny how in my case some of those kids eventually became fans of The Beatles. Perhapes some of those kids who teased Dhani also became fans of The Beatles.

In the 80's it was considered uncool if you liked a 60's group. Even the Beatles. We know how great they are, but those who were not raised on them or were only casual listeners, thought they were a has-been.

... now that you mention it, yeah...

Circa 1984/1985, when I was in high school (in my english class), we had one or two instances where we had to choose a song, play the record or video in front of the class, then comment on the lyrics...

Choosing ''Revolution'', ''Get Back'' and ''Ebony & Ivory'', I became a laughing stock for a while !

I remeber kids laughing at the Beatles version of "I saw her standing there" and they said that Tiffany's version was much cooler.

Tiffany couldn't sing even in a green Chevrolet. Growing up when I did, I took a lot of stuff for being a Beatles' fan. Funny, when people wanted to tease with a song, they invariably chose "Yesterday." Instead of giving me trauma, strife and grief, I still love the song and actually appreciated their derisive serenades. I still like the song.

I liked Tiffany growing up, but I got over her when I started liking New Wave. Now she's a porn star I think.

I guess her stage name could be TifFanny.

I never cared for her and never thought she could carry
a tune in a green Chevrolet.

*ducks* I liked her and I begged for her album for my birthday. My friend and I used to sing her songs at sleepovers. Ahem. Then I noticed Debbie Gibson.
