I think you're talking about that footage in the beginning of The Beatles Anthology.
Thatīs from 1953 movie The Wild One.

Didn't that movie also mention the name "Beatles"? Or was that a different movie, I can't even remember now... but the story I've always heard about how John got it through a vision about a man on a flaming pie. Did he really hear it in a movie, though, and might that have influenced him?

Hmm...
I always thought that he made up "toppermost of the poppermost" himself, but that maube it was a take on something he'd heard in a movie.
Also that the name Beatles was in a movie they'd all seen at one point, but the double meaning came from the man in the dream with the flaming pie.
Does this help?

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">yes, in the movie "the wild one" with marlon brando someone says something like "we missed you (someone)! we all missed you! even the Beetles missed you!" apparently a "beetle" is another name for motorcycle-chick. kind of makes you wonder, hey??? and i think in the anthology george or someone says that this movie is where they really got the idea for the name "beatles" (with an "A").
great movie by the way. everyone should see it. its too bad marlon brando could not maintain his extreme hotness.....

"The wild one" was Stu's favourite movie and he thought of the name beetles. then John wanted a name with double meaning and he came up with the story of the man on a flaming pie and suggested beatles with an A. I think George said it on the Anthology.

Now that you mention it, I think I'm wrong, I got confused with the Johnny thing, and thought immediately of the Wild One footage on Anthology...

Like onosideboards said, it's a thing that Lennon made to cheer up the guys in their less sucessful early days.

Sorry, Lennondrop, for the mess up...

No you were right. I went and got 'The Wild One' and watched it today. He says it in the beginning when the other boys ask him where they are going. Its a good movie. I cross referenced it with ...I can't remember the name of the book at the moment and am not going to look for it, and that was the movie that it said John got it from. Someone on here said that it was Stu's fave movie, it was also John's. Hence the hat that he always wears in the earlier years of the Beatles, and then after them with Yoko. Oh how I need to shut up.

Thank you everyone that has responded to my question. Great to know other people listen.

That "someone" that the Beetles are missing is Johnny, Marlon Brando's character.

"Weīve missed you, Johnny, all the Beetles missed you"

See the connection?

It wouldn't surprise me either way cuz remember John said that he'd ask them in his "pseudo-American voices," which could mean mocking Marlon Brando.

Oh, and why is the statement in question campy?

It just seems to me like the kind of thing that you'd expect to crop up in a Broadway musical (or Cliff Richard film) - "Where are we going boys? Why, to the toppermost of the poppermost! Say, why don't we do the show right here?" etc... *
If the phrase does appear in 'The Wild One' (though hopefully not uttered by Lee Marvin), then I'm sad to say that I'm in even less of a hurry to see the film than I was before...
