Here`s the NME commentary for the weeks 9 June to 28 July 1962:

"The album chart was born - but the single still ruled. Most LPs were Greatest Hits compilations, film soundtracks or spin-offs from TV. Aside from "sophisticated" artists (Frank Sinatra) only the very biggest sellers in pop made LPs of new material at all, and even these offered potential hit singles plus filler tracks. Exceptions were Ray Charles` "Modern Sounds" (a prototype Concept Album: a radical fusion of country and soul) and "Honey Hit Parade", a spin-off from the Radio Luxemburg show. "

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Radio Luxemburg was the only respite from the BBC light programme: it acutally played lots of records, because it sold airtime to record companies. The big ones (EMI and Decca, embracing exciting American-music labels: London, Coral, RCA) had half-hour shows, like Jimmy Savile`s Teen and 20 Disc Club (Elvis was member no. 11321). Smaller companies (Pye, Philips) had quarter-hours they struggled to fill with Britishers (note the hits on Pye`s cheap label Golden Guinea).

NME commentary for the past 8 weeks:

BBC DJ Brian Matthew wrote in his book "Trad Mad" that "the 60s may well come to be labelled the ten years of Trad...". Mercifully he was mistaken. Trad was to prove a short-lived craze, though this autumn was its zenith. Not content with pastiches of pre-war jazz for people alarmed by anything more modern, adults also bought huge numbers of Black And White Minstrels records, stimulated by TV series in which white Britons parodied Dixieland. In the real Deep South segregation remained.

NME commentary for the last 6 weeks:

The grown-ups dreamed of a white Christmas with the Black and White Minstrels at #1, #2, and #5. While parents also bought each other soundtracks of musicals, trad, Sinatra and swinging brass, there was room in the charts for just three pop acts: Bobby Vee meeting the Crickets, the Shadows and Elvis. Vee personified the legendary clean-cut Bobbies of post-rock`n`roll. the Shadows were big because they had headed another craze of the day: for guitar-based instrumental hit singles.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Shadows boss Cliff Richard leapt straight in at #2 with the LP of his film about taking a London double-decker for a "Summer Holiday" in Europe. This cheer reached the top slot in freezing February (it was the coldest winter in living memory; Sylvia Plath killed herself in London that month). Cliff held the latest Presley movie-soundtrack at bay and was to remain at #1 right through till May, when the Beatles would introduce themselves to the LP top spot and hold on to it for five months straight.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

The Beatles` LP chart arrival came at No. 9 that March, three places below a curious posthumous album by Buddy Holly. Reminiscing offered some previously-unissued Holly songs overdubbed by the Fireballs at the behest of producer Norman Petty, whose studio in Clovis, New Mexico, was almost as famous as Sam Phillips´ Sun studio in Memphis. At this time record-buyers knew nothing of such matters as outtakes; each time "new" Holly material emerged, they were surprised there were any left.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:
Eddie Cochran had died in 1960, Holly in 1959. Here they were charting three and four years on. This gave the lie to the prevalent notion that pop was ephemeral rubbish by nine-day wonders without the staying power of the great entertainers. Yet to look back on this first year`s LP chart is to ask whatever happened to the George Mitchell Minstrels, the Ray Conniff Singers, Dorothy Provine? What Sammy Davis Jr. record remains even an easy listening favorite? 30 years on, Holly, Presley and Cliff are the survivors.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Many other enduring pop artists were around, but most were in the singles chart. Hit 45ers of 1962/63 included the Everlys, Shirelles, Crystals, Drisfters, Rick Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Cooke and Roy Orbison. Now, however, with the Beatles topping the LP chart, it was the Mersey sound that threatened them. Merseybeat was the punk of its day: grassroots music anyone could play, it was (to begin with) rough stuff. It was now big enough for another Mersey group, the Searchers, to chart with an LP.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

The LP chart said less about the new beat groups` success than about the medium. Cheap and ideal for the short guitar-bass-drum number, the single and Merseybeat seemed made for each other, even while the music really thrived live in small venues for the young working-class. So the LP chart showed only the tip of the tip of this sweaty iceberg; the real tip remained the singles chart, topped August-October by the Searchers, Billy J. Kramer (his second No. 1), the Beatles and counterfeit-Merseysiders the Tremeloes.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

As Billy J. Kramer and Brian Poole made clear, the raw excitement of the new beat groups was to remain largely uncaptured on record, while vinyl success met those who made the music chirpy, clean and sweet. So the LP chart opened up also to Merseyside`s Gerry & the Pacemakers, whose hit singles were written by Tin Pan Alley`s Mitch Murray, and Manchester`s gruesome Freddie & the Dreamers, more novelty act than beat group, whose first hit had been a limp cover of an inspired, weird R&B classic by James Ray.

NME commetnary for the last 4 weeks:

It was a tradition for DJs to play US originals once and their "home-grown" covers interminably. This obtained both before Merseybeat (Marty Wilde vastly outsold Richie Valens with "Donna", despite Valens dying in the Holly plane-crash as his disc was released) and after it. In 1965 the TV show "Thank Your Lucky Stars" claimed that the Righteous Brothers` "You`ve Lost Your Lovin` Feeling" was too dull to hit and that Cilla Black`s version was superior. For beat groups, though, it was different: they covered obscure R&B because they loved it. This Christmas, beat groups occupied four of the five top LP slots.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

By now the real 1960s had begun, but the old guard fought on. The cash for LP-buying still belonged to adults whose ideas of good music pre-dated Rock`n`Roll. Despite the civil rights struggle in the USA (summer 1963 had seen Martin Luther King`s I Have A Dream speech) the Minstrels were back. So was Kathy Kirby, a young dance-band-era revivalist with glossy red lipstick and black seamed nylons. Mrs. Mills` image was more cleaning-lady than star; she tinkled singalongable medleys on her joanna.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Beatlemania was such that the sleevenotes of the Fab Four`s LP "Please Please Me" already sounded quaint: "Possibly", these had dared boast, "the most exciting British group since the Shadows." The LP sold in such huge numbers that it had reached No. 11 on the NME singles chart the previous December, while on 28 March 1964 the American Top 5 was all Beatles. Australian Frank Ifield, meanwhile, was nearing the end as a big star in Britain, with four No. 1 singles behind him, plus many smaller hits, 4 in 1964 alone.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

The Rolling Stones` debut LP also sold strongly enough to enter the singles chart, jumping straight to No. 1 in the LPs. They managed this despite ignoring co-manager Eric Easton`s advice to Andrew Loog-Oldham in 1963: "The singer", said Easton, "will have to go. The BBC won`t like him". The folk revival, a major US trend since 1961, brushed the LP chart via Peter, Paul & Mary. Bob Dylan`s LP chart debut was as their sleevenote-writer, and composer of "Blowin` In The Wind".

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

The title "Stay With The Hollies" referred to their revival of an 88-second masterpiece by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, "Stay" (to re-chart in 1978 by Jackson Browne), which they followed up with Doris Troy`s "Just One Look". Chuck Berry was surprised to be charting (he was also rising high with the 45 "No Particular Place To Go"), for despite his legendary status he had gone from 1958 till 1963 with no UK hit. (His onyl No. 1 was to be 1972`s "My Ding-A-Ling", a ponderous novelty item).

NME commentary

If Chuck Berry was a relative chart stranger, rock and blues classics remained in the public ear. Berry`s "Johnny B. Goode", Little Richard songs and Muddy Waters` "Got My Mojo Working" were core repertoire for every beat group, and now they were on vinyl. The Swinging Blue Jeans had hit with "Good Golly Miss Molly", the Beatles with their "Long Tall Sally" EP, and in November the Stones would be No. 1 with "Little Red Rooster", learn from Howlin` Wolf. Oldest originator with a hit was Louis Armstrong.

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Plane-crash victim Jim Reeves enjoyed phenomenal success in 1964. By October he had only two LPs in the Top 10, but there had been six of them since mid-August. In the last week of September, five of the Top 10 were Jim Reeves LPs. Another would arrive for Christmas. By year`s end, he was the artist with the most chart weeks to his credit, Beatles notwithstanding. Meanwhile November saw Bob Dylan`s first entry to the charts in his own right, with (oddly) both his second LP and his fourth.

RE 10 The Animals - Animals

NME commentary for the last four weeks:

Both Dylan LPs dropped out of the Top 10 after only a week but the wonder is that they had made it at all, with no chart single to stimulate sales. Every other act in the Top 10 at the time had big hit singles behind them. The Beatles, the Animals, the Kinks and Manfred Mann had allrecent No. 1s; the Bachelors had scored a No. 1 and three other Top 5 singles this year; the Supremes had had a No. 2 in September and a No. 1 earlier in November; Cliff Richard was about to get his fourth Top 10 of the year; the Hollies had already had four Top 10s in the last twelve months; Roy Orbison had just enjoyed his second No. 1 of the year; and the Stones were at No. 1 now. In contrast, Bob Dylan was not to enter the Top 10 singles chart until the following year. His success with two unsupported LPs, therefore, was something special 8211; and hinted at the changes he was almost single-handedly to bring about in the near future. Even as Beatlemania raged on both sides of the Atlantic, Dylan was to be the catalyst for the imminent split between "pop" and "rock", revolutionising what songs could say, calling radio`s bluff in demanding the 3-minute single, deposing the 45 from its pre-eminent position, and empowering the LP as a medium in its own right. Thus the LP became the album. Dylan was to change the language of the industry as well as of the song. He would even change the Beatles.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

Winston Chruchill, born 1874, took the Jim Reeves chart-route. Like Dylan, he had no supporting single. The LP emphasised wartime speech extracts. More curious was the "Lennon-McCartney songbook": (This US female vocalist didn`t really co-write the Beatles` songs). One of chart history`s least remembered entries, its success was due partly to Frank Sinatra´s label Reprise - it had already achieved chart placings for eleven albums.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

February saw "Another Side Of Bob Dylan", his fourth LP, back in the Top 10, and by the end of March he was in the lists with a vengeance, with his second album, "Freewheelin`", re-entering alongside his newly-arrived third LP, while its title-track, aptly named "The Times They Are A-Changin`", finally took him into the singles chart. In April this went Top 10, as he came to Britain for what would prove his last solo-acoustic tour, captured on D.A.Pennebaker`s pioneering rock-documentary "Don`t Look Back".

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

In mid-tour, Dylan was told by the Sheriff of Nottingham`s wife: "everybody loves you ... I think the songs are very wonderful. And you write them yourself, too, don`t you, sometimes?" By May Day, Dylan`s "electric" single, "Subterranean Homesick Blues", was in the top 20 alongside his two-year old "protest" song; soon after, his new album, with one acoustic and one electric side, topped the LP chart. The Sheriff`s wife surely preferred the LPs just below in early June: "The Sound Of Music" and "Hit Maker".

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

Burt Bacharach and Hal David were a "sophisticated" Goffin-King: a series of their songs became unfailing hits for whoever recorded them, while being instantly recognizable as Bacharach-David. Ther ewas "Walk On By" and "You`ll Never Get To Heaven" by Dionne Warwick - the former would chart again for the Stranglers in 1978 - "Anyone Who Had A Heart" by Dionne Warwick and Cilla Black. "Trains And Boats And Planes" wasa 1965 hit by Billy J. Kramer and by Bacharach himself

NME commentary for the last 8 weeks:

And then came Joan Baez. Since mid-June she`d been quietls storming the chart (in parallel with the single "There But For Fortune"), with her exciting LP titles "Joan Baez In Concert No. 5", "Joan Baez", and "Joan Baez In Concert No. 2" (in that order). The first and last of these were to stay in and around the Top 10 all through August and September, by which time she had another hit single with Dylan`s "It`s All Over Now, Baby Blue", while he rode the charts with the 6-minute long single "Like A Rolling Stone".

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

Baez wasn`t the only Dylan-associated artist straddling both charts. The Byrds` "Mr. Tambourine Man" had been a No. 1 single and a No. 5 album; now Dylan`s "All I Really Want To Do" went Top 10 for them and Cher, giving her a hit album, too. Manfred Mann, after a hit EP featuring "With God On Our Side", went Top 3 with the Dylan song, "If You Gotta Go Go Now", and LP-charted in October. Donovan, "Britain`s Dylan", now had a hit album too, while Baez had yet another in "Farewell Angelina" - again a Dylan title.

NME chart commentary for the last 4 weeks:

On the other hand "The Sound Of Music", "Mary Poppins", Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Dudley Moore and "My Fair Lady" told a different Christmas story. That Elvis Presley`s album couldn`t sustain its place in the Top 10 on the big day reflected two trends: first, it was a ragbag collection of tracks, typifing his label`s disrespect for his catalogue; second, it mirrowed his falling status, both because of all the awful formula-movies he`d been making and because, since the birth of the Beatles, he was yesterday`s man. The Beatles still ruled - they had a new No. 1 LP and the No. 1 single ("Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out"). If Mary and Tony and Andy (and even Elvis) suggested Christmas past, and the Beatles the Christmas present, one future was surely hinted at by the puns lurking unsubtlely in both the Beatles` single title "Day Tripper" and the title of the Stones` latest LP "Out Of Our Heads".

Crispian St. Peters, with three 1966 hit 45s ("You Were On My Mind", "Pied Piper" and "Changes"), claimed in the music press: "My songs are better than the Beatles` songs. You just wait. People will be singing my songs when they`ve forgotten who the Beatles were." He never reached the LP chart. In contrast, "The Sound Of Music", in there since the chart beganm would still be selling enough to stay in the Top 10 as the 1970s dawned, and still in the chart when the Beatles broke up.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

P.J. Proby was another whose chart profile shortchanges his talent. Blessed with an immense vocal range, his Top 10 hits on Decca in 1964, "Hold Me" and "Together", upbeat white R&B using a high, near-demented voice flailing in the mix, were instantly followed by ballads on Liberty with a deep, rich voice, starting with an inspired "Somewhere", from "West Side Story", and, later, the same show`s "Maria", on which a post-climactic falsetto swooped down to operatic full-throated declamation. Great.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

Without ruffling the LP chart, Dusty Springfield, Manfred Mann and Frank Sinatra all scored No. 1 singles in this period. "You Don`t Have To Say You Love Me" was Dusty`s first, "Pretty Flamingo" Mann`s second. Meanwhile Bob Dylan toured Britain again, now backed by rocker Ronnie Hawkins` exmusos The Hawks (later The Band). Led by guitarist Robbie Robertson, they and Bob got booed nightly. The famous audience cry of "Judas!", long attributed to London, actually happened in Manchester.

NME commentary for the last eight weeks:

While the Stones suffered the ignominy of being knocked off the top slot by "The Sound Of Music" instead of by the Beatles, the Beach Boys turned from muscle-bound WASPs (recent charting album "Beach Boys` Party!") into serious artists of radical musical complexity with their new LP entry, the limpid "Pet Sounds", and its single, "Good Vibrations", which alone had taken the same gestation period as a human baby. It was the peak of writer/producer Brian Wilson`s career, and hung the term "genius" around his neck.

NME commentary:

In the Beach Boys` "Pet Sounds" and the newly-arrived "Blonde On Blonde", a double-album, the LP chart had two classics. They heralded the age of Progressive Rock. From now until about 1973, when the real 1970s began, this movement would prove a force for good, producing some of the most creative, richly diverse, musically fresh and longest-lasting work in popular music history. Only later would its decay into self-indulgent elitism and murky torpor make the very term Progressive Rock one of abuse

NME commentary:

Matching those "Well Respected Kinks", which was on Pye`s cheap-LP label Marble Arch (successor to Golden Guinea), Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers` November chart-entry marked the debut of EMI`s cheap label "Music For Pleasure". While the group`s name commemorated a venerable (1958) Duane Eddy hit, they played, extremely well for British copyists, Drifters-style mid-60s soul. Their third and final hit single, "Got To Get You Into My Life" (revisited in 1978 by Earth, Wind & Fire), had peaked in September.

The NME now began to publish the Top 15 albums rather than the Top 10. While this acknowledged the growing importance of the album as a medium for artists and listeners, and thus of LP sales to the industry, no surprises or delights were immediately revealed by the records making it into the extra published places. NME commentary:

Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band were surely thrilled to find themselves high in the chart, and for so long, with "Hand Clappin` Foot Stompin` Funky Butt Live". As this ponderously wacky title hints, Geno was felt to be great live but unreproduceable on disc. On February 18, his album at No. 12, he achieved his highest-ever singles placing: the forgettable "Michael (The Lover)" made No. 30 for one week. Yet he was an institution for many years, seemingly second on the bill at every student ball ever held.

NME commentary:

An extra-good couple of months for easy listening music. Why is it called this? Do you know anyone who finds it easy to listen to? Imagine, after two Herb Alpert album and "Distant Drums", rushing to listen easily to these new entries: "Mantovani`s Golden Hits", the soundtracks of "Doctor Zhivago" and "The Fiddler On The Roof", and, last but not least, "This Is James Last". Not the sounds we generally think of as vintage early 1967. "Fresh Cream" managed to get into there too - now that was more like it.
