Default Nowhere Boy

I was so sorry to have missed a great preview of the film at the NY Metro Beatles Fest.

Since we're all die-hard fans... I'm curious to know what you know, what you've seen, and what you thought about it.

Eh?

Honestly, I think it looks terrible. Well, maybe not terrible, but not a good movie at any rate. It seems a bit melodramatic, doesn't it? I'm thinking about attending the preview just in case this was one of those situations where the trailer isn't a fair representation of the film. I'll give it a chance, but I don't have high hopes.

I want to see it out of mere curiosity. I've seen pretty much every other Beatles-related movie, so why not this one? The only problem is that I have no idea when it's going to be coming to Canada, or at least coming to a theatre near me. Has an international/North American release date been announced?

There are other threads on this site devoted to Nowhere Boy, but since you asked, here's my opinion:

A friend made a copy for me recently and I watched it. I thought it was lovely and emotional, but it wasn't great. I had read the original screenplay, which was infinitely better. To me as a Lennon freak, what was missing from NB was John's electric personality and the screenplay showed it better, imo. Also, if you don't already know the Lennon story, I think NB's plot was a little confusing and, to me at least, it was not nearly as dramatic as it could have been. Too many details were left out... the film was only 90 minutes long. Why couldn't they have gone the distance with it? I mean, come on, what could be more dramatic than John Lennon's tormented childhood?

The whole he-didn't-look-like-John, he-didn't-look-like-Paul thing was not one bit distracting to me, because the actors were all very good. My biggest beef about other Beatles movies is that they try to get actors who look like the boys (hello, Ian Hart... who I think looks more like Julian than John) at the expense of an emotional connection.

There is a magazine entitled Empire which is pretty much available in most major book stores. (Its a British publication with a $10 price, but it is a far better magazine about film than anything I know of in the States.)

It has an article about the film, which you easily read at the store if you don't feel like buying it. I hadn't heard about the film until I had read this article, so I am curious as well. Wikipedia states that the film will be released in the States sometime in December 2010.

I'd say it is worth seeing but don't be expecting too much.

Any Beatley film is annoying for mega fans. We spot all the inaccuracies.

Who is in it? Is it a good cast?

I found it online a few weeks ago to watch. Surprisingly, the film was great. Aaron Johnson played the role of John Lennon and he really got the character down. Trust me, I recommend you give it a chance, probably the best Beatles related movie I've seen.

I've been watching a few clips and previews of the movie tonight. I'm quite curious to see it, just to see how the story is portrayed (hope it isn't TOO overly dramatic...) The John Lennon accent is surprisingly good, but it still bothers me that none of the characters look ANYTHING like the real Beatles!! I have a hard time getting over that. Especially Paul's character.

I found it slightly irritating that Julia's death took place in broad daylight, not at dusk, and that Mimi didn't start taking in lodgers until after she was widowed.

There are a TON of factual errors in this movie... and even though Sam Taylor-Wood has explained that her focus was on the basic story and not the facts, I really don't understand why she decided on the changes that she did. As I've said, the original screenplay was far superior to the script they ended up with...

But I still enjoyed it.

I've tried pretty much everywhere. Apparently it's out on DVD now, but there's still not even so much as a torrent for it. Bad news for people in the US as the DVD won't work in your players. As far as I know it isn't even being shown in the showcase cinemas around the UK. I guess your best chance (if you want to see it soon) is to buy both the DVD and a region 2 DVD player. Otherwise you'll just have to wait a while and hope it eventually gets streamed or seeded.

I agree, I just watched it last night and I REALLY liked it.

Some of the parts surrounding Julia and Mimi were overly dramatized to make the movie more interesting to non-Beatle fanatics, but I thought it was funny how some details were very intricate; like the shirt that was worn by John in the movie at The Quarry Men's show where John and Paul met, is the same pattern as the shirt the real John was wearing at the same event (as seen in photographs).

Also, I think non-Beatle fanatics can get the jist of the movie and still enjoy it, but there were definitely some things I wouldn't have understood had I not been a Beatle freak, such as the quick comment at the end about "some of Stu's paintings"

My friend sent me a link, but it wasn't working. I really want to see it, just for the sake of saying I saw it. I hear it's coming out October 8th in the US.
