I have to say, I love the cover art. I heard that the original Live at the BBC will see a 'remastered' release on the same day, I'm guessing in the same cardboard fold-out packaging as the newer releases. If so, I'll have to pick both up for consistency's sake!

I know the press release states that it doesn't duplicate any recording featured on the first collection, however I am a bit disappointed that there are so many songs we already got a performance of the first time around (do we really need two made-for-radio recordings of The Hippy Hippy Shake that probably sound near identical?). Just my 2 cents.

Another Set of Beatles’ BBC Recordings Is On the Way

I'm pleased it's finally coming. YAY!

I'm really psyched for this but I'm kinda bummed they left off "I Call Your Name," "I Should Have Known Better," "The Night Before," and "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You." I get why they didn't include the Pete Best stuff but I think those four are the only other songs not represented on either volume. Unless they're holding on to them for a potential third volume, I'm not sure why they would overlook these, especially since "The Night Before" is better than the Help! version.

I got a notice from Amazon about it. Darn shame "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" was omitted. That's one of my favorite songs!

That there's only two "new" songs on that whole double CD !

("new", as in, never studio recorded/released tracks... or never previously released, be it a different live version, on "Anthology" or the first "BBC" CD...)

Maybe "I'm talking about you" (which I have on a bootleg), "Beautiful dreamer" and maybe "Happy birthday dear saturday club", though probably not a "proper" track per say, more like a "From us to you", like on the first "BBC" CD.

Too boot, a good number of the tracks were on the first one too, though probably, I hope as different renderings... but the Beatles, especailly back then (1962-65) weren't The Doors, as far as doing "drastically different sounding versions" of a song, from one show, to the next.

... where as the first BBC CD had 26 (26 !) such "new" songs ?

OK, they went all out on the first one... not knowing that, 19 years later, they'd do a second one... but they only had those two songs still left in the can ?

How about "Dream baby" (the Roy Orbison number), that they did while Pete was still on drums (available on bootleg), for one ?

I remember skipping through the track list of a bootleg "Complete BBC" a few years ago, and I seem to recall more than a couple of "never studio/recorded" songs, that were not on the first BBC CD).

... are they holding back on us, meaning to release a third BBC CD ?

"I'm Talking About You" and "Beautiful Dreamer" are the only non-EMI/BBC tracks featuring Ringo that are even available to release. (I mean actual songs, not stuff like "Tie Me Down Kangaroo Sport.") It's a shame that they didn't include every song ever recorded at the Beeb on the two volumes (and they didn't even include the best versions of the tracks they did in some cases), but it's not like there's a wealth of rarities to pick from. The first set cleaned out the majority of those, and they're not gonna do the Pete Best stuff because the sound quality's pretty bad and Apple doesn't want to deal with him.

Well, if it's just a couple of songs like that ("new" titles, but bad sound quality)... wouldn't it be better to have a few of those, and a few less versions of tracks that we've already had as on the first BBC CD ?

But have you heard how bad they sound? I mean, you could argue that the historical significance of it being their first BBC session outweighs that, but this isn't like Anthology 1, documenting the evolution of the band in audio form. The whole idea is to show the Beatles loosey-goosey, rocking in their element. A 19th-generation dub of "A Picture of You" doesn't really do that.

Well, even the bootlegged version of "Dream baby" doesn't sound THAT bad, not to mention that, for an official release like this, it would get at least some "cleaning-up"...

And it can't be the only one, like that, that has a not-so-incredibly-bad-sound-quality, among never before released tracks.

And where's the "historical significance" of having yet another, and probably rather similar, version of songs like "Glad all over", being put out ?

Fine, don't include those "new" ones if the sound is so bad, but then maybe issue BBC II only as a single CD to lessen the number of "duplicate" tracks ?

But what's wrong with duplicates? I'm not crazy about "Glad All Over" either, but Beatles fans have been begging for more unreleased material for years. We're finally getting some--this is the first release of new archive material in 17 years. Feel free to skip those duplicate tracks if you want, but why would you want less when Apple is so notoriously stingy when it comes to the Beatles' vault? If it were up to me, this would be a massive box set like the Great Dane, comprising every single existing recording they did for the BBC. Who knows, with copyright expirations on the horizon, maybe that's on the way, and that's where those Pete Best songs will show up. (FWIW, as far as the songs being "probably rather similar," Apple has released the info on recording/transmission dates for every song on the second volume and pretty much every BBC recording is on YouTube, so you can compare them if you're on the fence about buying this.)

Also, last year, a ton of BBC tapes showed up in higher quality than had ever been available before. This (and the remaster of the first volume) will sound significantly better than the 1994 CDs. Alas, an upgrade for that first session remains MIA.

Ten of On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2’s songs were never recorded by the group for EMI in the 1960s, including two making their debuts with the new release: The Beatles’ direct-to-air performance of Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You” and a rocking cover of the standard “Beautiful Dreamer.” On Air also includes different versions of six rarities heard on the 1994 BBC collection: Little Richard’s “Lucille,” Chuck Berry’s “Memphis, Tennessee,” Chan Romero’s “The Hippy Hippy Shake,” Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman,” and two songs they learned from records by Carl Perkins, “Glad All Over” and “Sure To Fall.”

The Beatles’ tribute to the BBC’s most important pop show of the early ’60s – “Happy Birthday, Dear Saturday Club” – is another surprise. As John Lennon recalled in 1980, “We did a lot of tracks that were never on record for Saturday Club – they were well recorded, too.” Paul remembers, “We’d been raised on the BBC radio programs. One of the big things in our week wasSaturday Club – this great show was playing the kind of music we loved, so that was something we really aspired to.”

Between March 1962 and June 1965, no fewer than 275 unique musical performances by The Beatles were broadcast by the BBC in the U.K. The group played songs on 39 radio shows in 1963 alone. Ringo Starr said in 1994, “You tend to forget that we were a working band. It’s that mono sound. There were usually no overdubs. We were in at the count-in and that was it. I get excited listening to them.” On their busiest BBC day, July 16, 1963, The Beatles recorded 18 songs for three editions of their Pop Go The Beatles series in fewer than seven hours.

The group played 88 distinct songs in their BBC sessions – some were recorded many times; others performed just once. At the time, three national BBC stations provided all daytime radio broadcasting in the U.K. Only the Light Programme network might occasionally play a record. Most broadcast music was live music. Consequently, to promote their releases, The Beatles had to play live at the BBC. “Everything was done instantly,” remembered George Harrison, “But before that, we used to drive 200 miles in an old van down the M1, come into London, try and find the BBC and then set up and do the program. Then we’d probably drive back to Newcastle for a gig in the evening!”

On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 also features BBC recordings of 30 well-loved songs from The Beatles’ catalogue, including five number ones and other favorites such as: “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Twist And Shout,” “Do You Want To Know A Secret,” “Boys,” “Please Mister Postman,” “Money,” “And I Love Her,” and “If I Fell.”

Like its critically acclaimed predecessor,On Air includes audio of The Beatles talking to DJs Brian Matthew and Alan Freeman andPop Go The Beatles hosts Lee Peters and Rodney Burke. When first broadcast, pop fans were amazed to hear such witty irreverence on the rather formal BBC and it is great fun to hear these extracts now. In addition,On Air releases, for the first time, the group’s candid interviews for thePop Profile series recorded in November 1965 and May 1966.

Live at the BBC was assembled by George Martin in 1994 and On Air - Live at the BBC Volume Two was compiled and researched by producers Kevin Howlett and Mike Heatley. Both albums have been meticulously mastered by engineers Guy Massey and Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios. The booklets for both collections include Kevin Howlett’s essays on the history of The Beatles’ BBC radio sessions and his detailed commentaries on all of the tracks.

I haven't bought it yet. How does it stack up to already released bootlegs? Considerably better quality? Any previously unknown versions? A must have for all or only the most dedicated Beatles fans?
