Default If there was a girl in the beatles, who should it be?

Ann Wison would be my choice. Amaaazing pipes. I'm not positing this would be particularly a great idea, rather if it were that way,Beatles added a girl,or started out with one perhaps, who might you pick?

Nobody.
There should never, EVER be a girl in the Beatles.
... not even me... :(

They were the LADS. The boys. The Fab Four. And they were "four parts of one".

OK, let's approach the question hypothetically and reasonably. Of course the Beatles were a "boy's club" and girls were not about to be allowed (women's liberation notwithstanding)...we all know that.

However, who would be a worthy contender? It needs to be somebody that was actually a contemporary of the band (so Ann Wilson is out--as good a choice as she may otherwise be), and someone who would bring some real talent--at the very least as a vocalist--to the table. A female songwriter would be preferable, but not absolutely necessary, of course. Based on those qualifiers, let me offer a few female singers or musicians from the 60s that might have been interesting to consider:

Cilla Black--She got on well with the band, and John and Paul wrote songs for her projects. She was a little on the too-sweet side, but other than that...

Lulu--She was a British lass who could rock with the best of the boys. She would have been a nice choice if they wanted someone to trade out rock vocal chores with John and Paul.

Carole King--John and Paul worshipped her songwriting (they covered her "Chains" on their first record, remember). She could have kept up with the guys both as a songwriter and as a keyboardist. And because they respected her so much, they probably wouldn't have crowded her songs off the albums like they did George.

Diana Ross--The Beatles made no secret that they loved Motown, and loved the Supremes especially. Diana could have made a pretty cool guest vocalist on some records, although her approach was probably a little too sedate for them overall.

Jackie DeShannon--Great songwriter, great singer, lots of attitude, and drop-dead gorgeous...had the Beatles ever wanted to add an All American Girl With Talent And Great Legs to the mix, she would be the one with all the goods.

Well, whatever...I'm sure some people just can't wrap their brains around this, but it's just hypothetical, and I'm finding it kinda fascinating.

There's one more lady I think would be interesting to consider...

Mary Hopkin--Paul produced her Apple debut album Postcard and she had Apple's first hit single "Those Were The Days". Some of her recordings pretty much sound like a Beatles record with female vocals. Paul wrote "Goodbye" for her. Whenever I hear "Martha My Dear", I think it sounds like a Mary Hopkin record.

I think that if the Beatles had done an album with Mary Hopkin as lead vocalist, it would be virtually the same thing as the 90s band Sixpence None the Richer. Their album Divine Discontent almost sounds like the Beatles and Mary Hopkin might have sounded had they done something together between the White Album and Abbey Road.

I think the idea of a Beatles "supersession" project around 1969 with both Billy Preston and Mary Hopkin on board for the ride might have been pretty fascinating stuff to hear. And what if James Taylor had been hanging out at Apple with nothing better to do around the same time? Wow, the possibilities...

Well, how about Francie Schwartz? How about Ronnie Spector or the Cookies or Martha and the Vandellas?

How about NO? LOL
They were known as the Fab Four for a reason. The Fab Five doesn't sound as nice.

As a woman, I'd have to agree. I definitely can't imagine a woman being in the band [or even another man] because it was perfect just the way it was, but it's a very interesting hypothetical question! :D

I like Shania Twain's attitude, even though she isn't a contemporary
probably Carly Simon, or Dusty Springfield would get my vote
although for me the idea of the boys having a girl in the band is quite horrid

OOH! My mind automatically wanted to go to Cilla Black or Mary Hopkin because of their strong connections, but Dusty is a very interesting choice I wouldn't have thought of! Nice...

The thought of ANY changes in the line-up is quite horrid to me, really. It especially upsets me to think about the whole Jimmy Nicol thing. It's not his fault, but think about it...if it had been any of the other members, especially John or Paul, they wouldn't have replaced them. I understand that the other three were "more essential" because of the vocals, but I still don't think Ringo was "replaceable." Anyway, that's irrelevant right now...

So far, I think my vote goes to Dusty. I think her voice would have been the best choice for them and their music.

lol ~ It's not necrophilia... it's time travel!

I think the strongest candidate would be Ronnie Spector. She was cool... and the boys (especially John and George) adored her!

I think Lulu or Dusty would have been interesting choices, but yeah, I find it hard to imagine anyone else as part of the group. It would have to be someone who meshes with the others' personalities and understands their background.

Out of the suggestions put forward, Dusty gets my vote.
