I picked up a book from the library called "How To Talk To An Autistic Kid". It's written by an autistic 14 year old boy. It's adorable He's about on the same spectrum as my son and they both share the same names and hobbies (they both like to draw).

Lloyd Nolan, an actor best known as the respectable doctor Matthew Swain the 1959 movie Peyton Place has a son with autism named Jay. In 1975, Lloyd Nolan founded a center for adults with autism in California. It is named for Jay Nolan. (Peyton Place was actually a good movie.)

I had no idea there was a thread on this already. I've enjoyed reading through some of the discussions and links that were brought up on past pages. I'm really interested on the many theories there are surrounding autism, and I'm amazed they are all still so controversial - that no one really knows what causes it.
My soon-to-be stepson is autistic and quite low functioning (non-verbal, doesn't respond to his name or other simple commands). I don't know what it's like to live with autism or other AS disorders, but as a (step)parent it's really heartbreaking and frustrating to be unable to form a bond with him like you can with other children. However, I'm so glad to hear of all the research being done... I wonder what kind of progress will be made in 10 or 20 years.

Neurotypical are smartening up about autism. I will express dismay over an episode of South Park called "Ass Burgers." One of the dads is mistaken for an Aspie and attends a group for people with Asperger's. Cartman thinks the word is Ass Burgers, so he stuffs some burgersin his underwear between his gluteal cheeks and sells his foul fetid Ass Burgers. They are a hit. This show, however is not a hit with me. I dislike the show; almost never watch it and felt this particular episode ridiculed people with Asperger's.

Be sure to read "The Spark" by Kristine Barnett. She has an extremely gifted son who has autism. She also ran a day care center and provided good teaching tips on working with kids with autism. She tapped into what THEY were interested in and in time, they used their interests successfully and the skills they developed while pursuing their passions later segued into courses of study and jobs that allowed them to demonstrate their expertise.

I finished reading that book. I really enjoyed it. I learned a good idea to deal with my son's meltdowns. I drew a chart similar to the pain charts used in hospitals. I told my son the same thing Kristine told Jacob. Losing at a game is a code 1 and should get a code 1 behavior.

The number codes is a good way for everyone to manage anger. A long light when you are in a hurry is probably a Code 1 -2 . Someone who trods on the rights of people with autism can incur the wrath of many up to a Code 10.
