Beatles' fans fight closure

CAMPAIGNERS battling to save Liverpool's Strawberry Field children's
home from closure have won international support.

Staff at the Woolton home, which became immortalised in The Beatles'
track Strawberry Fields Forever, called on the public to back them
earlier this week.

Now messages of support from outraged Beatles fans have come the USA
and New Zealand.

Since the Salvation Army announced plans to close the home, fears
have grown that the building and its world-famous gates might be sold
to a housing developer.

Fans from abroad have called on staff to put their 1,800-name
petition on the internet so they can create international pressure.

Penny Pearson, a lawyer from Colorado, said: "I went on a Beatles
pilgrimage to London, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Paris - all the Fab
Four's major haunts - and had the good fortune to spend several days
in Liverpool.

"Strawberry Field was one of the places I visited, but I don't think
you have to go there to appreciate the significance it holds in
Beatles history."

David Holmes, who runs US-based website Beatles Number Nine, said: "I
would like to help by starting an online petition for American
Beatles fans."

Now, if someone was clever, they'd buy the property and turn it into a Beatles museum perhaps, or some kind of exhibit thing. Think of how many people would visit just to be in THE Strawberry Fields.

I think that trying to force ths Salvation Army to keep what is essentially a money sink running is foolish. There are only THREE KIDS living there, with THIRTY staff members! You can't blame them for wanting to close it down. As a charitable organization, they have to consider where their money is going in order to keep on doing their good works.

This, however, does not mean that I'd like to see Strawberry Field turned into a housing estate or put to some kind of use that would destroy it. Perhaps if it was to be used as some kind of a civic project -- a park, a community center, something like that. I would think that perhaps the city of Liverpool (or is Woolton under a different jurisdiction?) would want to create such a thing for all the tourism revenue it would bring -- they already know that there's a lot of money to be made from people like us making our pilgrimages! Let's hope they make the right decision -- it took them way too long to recognize that if they extended a welcome, Beatles fans would come, and I would hate to see them blow it with this.
