George in the White House
This may be nice to read, regarding that visit to President Ford.
They met with Jack Ford, the President's son during the 74 tour. He was studying to be a lumberjack somewhere in the West or Midwest. He said "when you come to Washington you can come up to our house, the White House" . He hadnté even been there himself, but he flew in especially for the Washington concert and arranged the visit.
George said LOL
"Nixon had just left office, and that is why I was keen to go there. I wanted to see how many of the bad vibes were left hanging over there after Watergate.
The visit was arranged in two tours. Billy Preston, Tom Scott, Ravi, George's Dad and George were taken in to the private appartments, had lunch up there, came down and went in the Oval Office, and as they came out they bumped in to all the others from the Indian band wo arrived later.
Billy played "God Bless America" on the 200th or the 2000th Steinway. :)
There were quite good vibes in the White House, which was interesting, I couldn;'t believe the place felt as comfortable as it did, after going through the Nixon period"

I remember this because it was just when I very first started thinking about being a Beatles fan...wasn't George wearing a really ghastly jacket? Or was it the Prez who was wearing an ugly jacket? I remember SOMEBODY wearing an ugly jacket in that photo!

George had on a hideous plaid jacket (I thought it was hideous). He was quite thin; mustached and smiling at Ford and his son Jack. I agree that George's plaid jacket was ghastly, but after all, ghastly was a part of Seventies Fashion! (along with polyester suits; big collars; wide ties and big, loud patterns as well as platform shoes. Never cared much for 70s fashion).

George looks a midget beside these guys....
...and no doubt he looked the very last thing in fashion for an ageing rock star....at that precise moment in time.

Oh, absolutely! Ugly plaid jackets were quite the thing back then. I cringe when I look at photos of myself during the same time period! At least he's not wearing it with Ford's ugly tie!
Yes, the silly one is the photo I remember.

Yeah, the Stinky Seventies was a time for atrocious fashion. I didn't like plaid jackets and big wide ties even in those days! And the clothes I wore in the Stinky Seventies -- pictures make me cringe as well to this very day! (I did like the feathered hair, though. It was fun to do the round brush thing).
I saw Gerry Ford AND Jimmy Carter at one of the local libraries in April of 2000. They gave an excellent talk. The men are friends and both were very interesting. I had a good seat in that library auditorium; I was a few seats from the front. Ford and Carter certainly did command respect and the audience was literally hanging onto what they were saying.
Betty Ford and Roz Carter have my deepest respect. Betty for the clinic she started (Ringo was one of the many famous clients who were served by her clinic) and Roz for her tireless efforts on behalf of the mentally ill. She has written several books and she, along with Jimmy Carter have been actively involved in Habitat for Humanity. This is the kind of thing that has my unflagging respect. My town has two large Habitat stores and I can't recommend Habitat highly enough. The Carters have also been missionaries in Central America and have worked, eaten and lived with the people they were building houses for.

I admire Mr. Carter for spending his retirement years participating in such selfless, productive activities when he could be spending them on the golf course. Just by doing , he's set a better example of good family values than some other politicians who like to preach to us at election time.

Remember those pastel suits with wide lapels that the boys would wear to the prom? And with ruffly shirts!

I agree wholeheartedly, GGirl. I have the deepest, most unflagging respect for the Carters for being actively involved in humanitarian efforts. He has indeed set an excellent example for family values and he, unlike some other politicos practices what he preaches.
Yeah, I remember those ghastly pastel suits. In 1985, the show Miami Vice made pastel men's suits and 5:00 shadow a fashion statement.

It would be nice to think of something 'smarter' than this - but probably that is exactly what he was saying - he is looking directly at the tie.
...and just to bring this to the top again...
