Default Chicago Fest 2008

I've been a fan for about five years ago, but I've never been to the Fest. I've gotten close before, but never quite gotten around from it. I'm only about an hour away from the Hyatt.

I just got into a brand new Beatles kick (I've had all of the albums and misc stuff for years) after seeing American English, and I figure now is the best year for me to check out the Fest. I'm going into college, so I have some money to throw around, whereas in subsequent summers it'll probably be tighter.

I'm thinking of going Saturday, with some combination of myself, my girlfriend, my brother, or my dad. Maybe by myself.

Is any of the merchandise worth it or is it all incredibly overpriced? What would you recommend doing on the Saturday?

Also, I suppose this can just be our main discussion thread. Who's going?

I've been to the Beatlefests in New Jersey. Most of the merchandise that I've paroozed has been pretty reasonable.
If The Smithereens are playing, I recommend them.
Hope this helps.

I'll be there! If you can only manage one day, it depends on what you like...Saturday's the most crowded and the most going on, but Sunday has Battle of the Bands, which is fun if you like live music. Some merchandise is overpriced, some is reasonable, depends on the dealer. Trivia and Name that Tune contests are kind of fun, as are some of the talks, there's a video room, but that's usually sorta lame. There are usually some people sitting around jamming if you're into that. In the evening they have a cover band (not the dress-up thing, but they sound pretty good) play.

For me, it's mostly socializing with my friends, though I may wait in line to get Patti's book autographed, we'll see how much time that'll involve...

Actually, now I was talking to my dad and brother, and I suggested that since we aren't going on a Civil War trip as planned, that we'll have to shelve till next summer, that we just go up to the Fest for two days. At first I suggested Saturday/Sunday, but would Friday/Saturday be better? I think we'd just drive both days; the gas will be less expensive than a hotel room.

I'm pretty much basically going at least Saturday, but if I go two days, should it be Friday or Sunday?

Thanks a lot,
Quarry

I'll be there, too! I go for Saturday & Sunday. Well, actually I get in Friday & just meet up with all my friends. Friday is really just the evening & many of my friends don't bother to get tickets. Saturday is the big day & the busiest as Rell mentioned. Sunday is good, though about evening they do start closing down the market place, but there's still music & fun in the main ballroom.

Are the Linkers going to do the usual meet up? Anybody know?

Would you definitely recommend going two days then? Too much to do for just one day?

I'll be there!

How about a linkers meetup at 9pm at the ugly statue and another meetup on Saturday maybe 11am?

If you can go two days, I'd vote for Saturday and Sunday. While Friday night is fun, it doesn't usually start until 5:30, so I don't know how late you're planning on staying.

You can see most things in just one day, but with two days you're not as rushed. And there are some things that only happen on one day, so it's best to give yourself 2 or 3 days so you can see just about everything.

I'll be there all three days, my husband and I are making it our vacation for the summer and that Friday is my birthday! Needless to say I am super excited.

If there's going to be a linkers meet up I'd love to be there.

Yeah, I'm with Lynner... There is a lot to do & not everything happens on all three days. Saturday & Sunday are the best for events in the ballroom. & depending on how many of the guests you want to meet or listen to, yeah, you'll want two days so you don't have to kill yourself trying to get all over.

Well, it looks like I'm just going one day. My brother is a fan but he's not incredibly enthusiastic about things like that, and my dad is as well but he's more of a fan of the early stuff. I just feel like it would be hard convincing them to go back up to the Fest after one day, and my dad agrees. So we'll see what we can on that one day.

Saturday or Sunday; which should I go? I know Saturday's probably the biggest, but would Sunday be better if I more just want to see the sights, and not so much socialise?

Saturday is the big day for everything. The market place will be open all day, the guests will be all over, there are a lot of events in the ballroom... I think you have more options on Saturday. You can choose what you want to do from about 4-5 things going on at any time. As we mentioned, Sunday, things often begin to pack up a bit earlier.

Well it's hard to say. Sunday has Battle of the Bands, but Saturday is the most crowded. Plus it's got the Sound-Alikes. If yer into Monty Python or the Rutles or Neil Innes himself, they're showing Neil's movie at 11:00 AM. (Which I for sure will be seeing!!! I love Neil!) By sunday everything's picked over in the marketplace but the dealers do sometimes lower prices to try and get rid of stuff.

If going one day, then my vote would be for Saturday - the most things to do and still lots of things for sale. And who knows? Maybe your dad would have such a great time that he'll decide to go back on Sunday!

You must go to the 60's dance party on Friday!

I've had many people ask if I'm attending, but I'm sorry to say that I most likely will have to miss this one. My work schedule and now having a longer distance to drive to attend are big deterrents; I mull over going anyway at least one day, but then I think more about the pros and cons and decide against it.

But I insist that all BLinker attendees keep us well informed about everything that happens each day (and say hi to Pattie for me).

Is the ugly statue immediately recognizable? the only one in the joint and all that good stuff?

My husband asked me to ask this question of the Chicago area natives, can you recommend any restaurants that we should visit while visiting downtown?
