Default Y'know what I think...

Regarding the "had Paul not met John or visa versa" argument, which usually goes that Paul becomes a dish washer, or perhaps John becomes a dock worker had they not met, I say likely they would've ended up in other bands. Likely not same level of success, but still likely that would have been somewhat successful. There were many bands going at the time, & mix & match with those likely what would have transpired with both John & Paul.

I believe he was very much into rock music.

"Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney met John Lennon and The Quarrymen at the Woolton church hall fête on 6 July 1957. McCartney played "Twenty Flight Rock", "Be-Bop-A-Lula", and a medley of Little Richard hits to Lennon and the band during a break"

McCartney developed rapidly as a musician, singer and songwriter. He was heavily influenced by Buddy Holly and Little Richard and famously appropriated of Little Richard's trademark high-pitched 'wooo', which he used prominently as a musical punctuation on early songs like From Me To You.

Anyway, they likley would have ended up mixing into other Liverpoolian groups had they not gotten together under Pete's house was it? Liverpudlian perhaps the correct spelling, however one likes it.

i think he was more influnced by jazz. since his father was jazz musician, he grew up listening to a lot of it. he liked writing frank sinatra type songs like when i'm 64. he possibly could of brached out into rock later, but i don't think he would have started with that.

I am with Shampoo on this one. Yes, young Paul liked jazz and show tunes and English music hall stuff, and his later songwriting proves it. But when he met John, he was already a rock and roller, who knew all the lyrics to "Twenty Flight Rock." I don't think John would have bothered to see the potential in Paul, if he had shown up with some Sinatra under his belt.

I am of the opinion that the two of them, especially so early on, had a powerful symbiosis (and competition) which pushed them further than they could have gone on their own. Would they have become professional musicians had they never met? It is fun to guess, but we can never know. My gut says that John would have, because he had nothing else that was really positive in his life, nothing that he really cared about; but Paul (though the greater raw talent, musically) was also more broadly ambitious, more charming and more middle class in his attitudes. A lot of John's working class stuff was a pose, the sort of thing only a middle class boy would embrace; Paul's slightly more marginal existence would keep him from wanting to "slum it." I always liked George's comment that, if not a Beatle, Paul would have become Dr. McCartney. After all his mum was a nurse.

But as I said it is just fun to guess.

Tony

Yeah, but where are the Hurricanes now? They have become a part of rock history only because Ringo drummed with them. Once he became a Beatle, the Hurricanes soon blew away into the misty haze of history.

They were all rock & rollers before they were Beatles---they woudn't have achieved the same success---no one has ever had that kind of success--but they would have played. Maybe they would have all ended up in regular day jobs.
