Thank's for uploading those different versions, hibgal

Personally, I prefer the first version (God save Oz) from the Anthology It sounds refreshing and less repetitive than the version of the POB. I don't like much the version of Elliot.

I just wonder why John supported such a.. hmm... special magazine ?? Does anyone know more about it ?

It wasn't ALL porn, Scruffie! It was considered counterculture and underground and had a lot of other features too criticizing the government etc. At that time, the EP was recorded in June 1971, John was very much into freedom of everything, particularly freedom of speech. So when approached by a friend he gave his support willingly. He and Yoko even took part in a protest march to support Oz. I never heard John was a regular reader but it wouldn't surprise me if he was.

Psst: That was Snoopy, Hib. But it happens a lot to me so maybe I'm just on your minds a lot. I have that affect on people.

Anyway, I really appreciate you plugging these demos. I actually really dig "God Save Oz" and, years ago, I did some research on Oz magazine and the story behind the obscenity trials. I believe, if I can remember well, what prompted John to write these songs was the fact that Oz had allowed contributions from school students and labeled the issue something that was misunderstand as being for young students. So when there was a certain article that was written by a 15 year-old kid and may have been slightly taken to an extreme interpretation...well, all hell broke loose.

I think John writing this song was his way of voicing out about the matter of that form of freedom being placed under such scrutiny. There was nothing pornographic involving underaged kids. It was just the material was considered offensive from them... Well, that's what I got anyway.

Oops! Of course I meant Snoopy! (just a Freudian slip, sir! )

As to Oz mag, that's pretty much how I understood it too. The contributors to a specific issue were minors, not that the publication was directed towards them. And the editors were acquitted in the appeal. For those interested there's quite a bit on wiki about them.

Oh I see, the purpose was more the freedom of speech, rather than the content of the magazine...

Thank's for your explanation, Scruffie and hibgal

^ I love that demo Snoopy! OMG, that song...I love it so much.

John was harder on himself than on anyone else. That is a fact.

Speaking of all that...

... is there anything "in the pipe" regarding any eventual release featuring some of those unreleased pieces ?

I haven't heard of anything... but we don't know everything Yoko's planning for the 75th yet.

There was rumor trickling that I listened in when in NYC in December/2010. Apparently, some people say she has something huge and unexpected planned. But of course, this is all here-say.

Ooooh no.... why do we have to wait so long ? I wonder what she meant by "unexpected" (maybe a clone of John ? )

C'mon Yoko, just hurry up, won't you ???

Default You Saved My Soul

When I was lonely and scared
I nearly fell for a TV preacher
in a hotel room
in Tokyo

Oh You
Saved me from that suicide
because of all the things
I've died
I want to thank you, thank you, thank you

Remember the time
I went to jump out of that apartment window
On the west side of town
of Old New York

Oh You
Saved me from that suicide
because of all my foolish pride
I want to thank you, thank you, thank you
for saving my soul with your true love

(Repeat first/second verses)

Wow. Does anyone have any thoughts on this one? Pretty heavy stuff. I, of course, no nothing about when this demo was made. I LOVE this song. I've played it now 6 times because I just love the melody and the way John sings it...but man. He had his dark moments. And then again, could this have been part of the musical?

All I know, Scruffie, is that You Saved My Soul is from a tape dated November 14, 1980, containing a block of four new songs - the others are Pop Is The Name Of The Game, Dear John and Serve Yourself. Supposedly these are the last demos John ever did. Soon as I can scare it up I'll post Pop Is...

Well, Scruff, I was thinking of this song in particular when I posted about Sean telling John to go out the window....

... and, not to be morbid, but what if Yoko's "no longer here" or unable to fuffil that kind of commitment by then (I mean, she will be 82 by 2015)

Wow indeed When I heard this song for the first time, I hoped that it was a fake and not from John But I'm afraid it's really him singing about suicide, just during the period of his life, when we thought he was happy.

Yes Scruffie, it's pretty heavy stuff and I find the lyrics scary; it doesn't really matches with the joyful melody. I feel kind of schizophrenic about this song; on one hand I like it, on the other hand it makes me sad to know that John were so depressiv Yoko, damn... didn't you notice that John wasn't happy in New York, Tokyo etc. ??? No doubt, John must have been felt very lonely, despite Yoko and even Sean...
