Looking through a glass onion means seeing life in a distorted way.

A bit like looking for Paul is dead clues everywhere!

Hadn't heard about it being the coffin top yet.
I'd read that "glass onion" was old British slang for the handle of a casket, because in the nineteenth century caskets had round glass handles that looked like glass onions.

Glass onions are the traditional British gift upon celebrating a 27th wedding anniversary.

The whole song was a joke. John was poking fun at all the people who took his lyrics so seriously and were constantly trying to find deep meanings in songs like "I Am the Walrus".

I heard it was slang for a monocle as well.
It makes sense to me because he says "lookin' thru a glass onion" and I can see how it could be a monocle.

Correct. even though glass onion is basically a nonsense song to confuse those whom would over and/or misinterpret the lyrics from other songs, the answer itself can be found in the lyrics.

Interesting thoughts here.

I have always thought Glass Onion was a Crystal Ball.
You know, seeing into the future and all that.

well.. let's look at this logically for a minute. i suppose i could say this and that is, it depends on what key it's in, and how you play it, that is. i could make a case for the song being in the key of G, Lennon you know, but it sounds like it's in am. it's those bent back tulips that get me, my friend.

There's an explanation about the bent-back tulips in Many Years From Now. They used to go to a very fancy restaurant that had bent-back tulips on the tables as sculptural art, hence the seeing "how the other half lives." I think the owner's wife owned a flower business or something. Does anyone remember the details?
This is quite interesting about the Glass Onion. I assumed John just made up some nonsensical lyrics again :]

Actually, I always thought this referred to the notion that an onion has many layers, so John was providing a jokey musical "glass onion" to refer to the many layers of meanings that Beatles songs supposedly had.

I read some bullshit conspiracy thing that said Glass Onion was a referring to a glass coffin. Which according to idiotic conspiracy theorists, was a song about Paul's death, the "Glass Onion" being his coffin. >.>
