On the Poll, Nobody\'s Picked Jimmy Nicol
Man, I hadn't heard that name in a long time. I guess I must be a Beatle fan because I actually know who Mr. Nicol is, and no, he ain't Ringo I wonder where he is now.

No he replaced Ringo briefly on a tour of, I believe, the far east. I think Ringo had tonsillitis(sp?) at the time.

Just checked. Ringo collapsed during a photo session on June 3, 1964. He had tonsillitis and pharyngitis and was replaced by Jimmy Nicol until he (Ringo) rejoined the band on June 15.

Speaking of the poll, who was the fifth Beatle? I'm sure one of you, if not all of you, can answer that. Like I said, I'm still a new fan, so be gentle.

Marz, it's usually said to be Pete Best, their drummer prior to Ringo.

Then why is George Martin winning on the poll?

Maral, Maral, Maral. So young and innocent. Where do I begin? George Martin was their producer in the studio. I can explain it all, maybe Friday afternoon. Jimmy Nicol was a fill-in drummer when Ringo got sick in 1964. I believe it was in Australia and a few other shows. Talk to you soon.

Re: On the Poll, Nobody\'s Picked Jimmy Nicol
george martin was the fifth beatle, hands down...i wish i had the time and energy to go thru it all, but i'll let it go for now....he did so much to help them create and record, it's really amazing they got all they did from him, he was tireless and with anyone else they probably would have gotten shut down on alot of their ideas

I agree. Just listen to Sgt. Pepper's and realize that George Martin accomplished that with the same kind of 4-track recording machine that we all have in our bedrooms collecting dust.

I don't have a 4-track, I'm not even sure what they are? So what are they?

Re: On the Poll, Nobody\'s Picked Jimmy Nicol
George Martin also arranged orchestra parts and keyboard solos and even played some of them. On Lovely Rita , for example, he played the tape at half speed, did the keyboard solo, and put it back to full speed and that's how come it sounds so unique (and hard to play). He was an integral component of the Beatles and if yoiu want to use the term 5th Beatle, Sir George is the man.

Wouldn't have ever met him without Brian Epstein though. And things started to go wrong after he died. I mean they weren't as strong together and that. I dunno.

Re: On the Poll, Nobody\'s Picked Jimmy Nicol
Brian set the cast; but Sir George molded the Fab Four into the superstars they became. Without Sir George Martin, as davewatt and Jerry stated, the Beatles might have never made it in the business.

Interesting!
You think George Martin moulded the Beatles?

Re: On the Poll, Nobody\'s Picked Jimmy Nicol
George Martin may not have moulded the boys exactly but he certainly guided them through their ideas and brought the ideas to fruitation. He also turned them on to his impressive musical knowledge and was there to add somnething when necessary.
