Anyone here gonna bid on it?
Quote:
We realize this piece of news borders on tasteless, but one of the most macabre pieces of rock memorabilia in history is for sale. NME is reporting that the copy of John Lennon‘s 1980 album ‘Double Fantasy’ that he signed for Mark David Chapman hours before the ex-Beatle was killed by Chapman, is being auctioned off. And it is of a sad coincidence that this news arrived on the anniversary of that tragic event.
California auction house Moments In Time is selling the album on behalf of its owner, who purchased it in 2003. According to the listing, the record not only bears Lennon’s autograph on the cover, but also Chapman’s forensically enhanced fingerprints. The marking “WJT-2″ appears in black ink just above Lennon’s signature, which is presumably some code from its use as evidence.
“We are very excited to bring such a historically significant piece to the market,” said Bob Zafian of Moments in Time, who is also the agent for the seller. “I have never come across a piece with such provenance; police reports, fingerprint documentation, letters from the District Attorney, it goes on and on”.
This is the third time the album is being on the market. The man who found the album outside Lennon’s apartment sold it in 1999, and it changed hands four years later. While the price is only available by request, its sale in 2003 came with a reserve price of $525,000.

I wouldn't say I'm "very excited" to hear this is on the market. Anything that was owned by Mark Chapman, regardless of if it has John's signature on it, shouldn't be up for auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars, in my opinion it should've been destroyed...

I'm not so offended by someone wanting to own that ghoulish thing and willing to pay what may amount to a million dollars, as I am offended that whoever is currently in possession of it is going to make a fortune. It sickens me that somebody may be lavishing themselves in luxury as a result of it.

Despite being signed by John, it's that it belonged to scum that no one will ever buy it and that it will never sell as it didn't then.

We couldn't agree more with Dizzy and Colonel, it's a sickening item and a true shame that it wasn't long ago destroyed.
Speaks volumes of not only the seller but buyers that would create a market and drive up the price for such a thing. As described, quite aptly in this thread, truly a ghoulish to even want the thing.
Sign of society too, it would be worthless if people just turned their backs on such things; as with tabloids, exploitation shows and general rubbernecking of other people's misery and suffering, and instead just got on with their lives and looked to put some good into their own and into this world instead.

why anyone would want to be reminded of that tragic event that robbed the world of probably the greatest musical talent ever is beyond words. as a memorabilia specialist i would not touch it with a barge pole.
