The End, and Get Back. Surprising how few songs I could even consider. John was probably the least proficient at lead guitar. His leads were basically just chordal intervals that he would play w varying ferocity. Which is not to diminish his rhythm playing. Which was absolutely stellar. The man had an incredible right hand. And he knew his Mel Bay Big Book of Guitar Chords.

Didn't John also play lead on You Can't Do That?

He was very insecure about playing lead (surprise, surprise )... and he would shy away and/or ask the camera people not to film him when he played the solo.

The Get Back solo was so rehearsed and labored. He was seen and heard playing it note for note throughout the Let it Be movie w no variation or deviation. Paul has improved as a lead guitarist since the Beatles era. But the Taxman solo sounds every bit as labored as Get Back. Considering it's a note for note reprise at the end of the song.

Actually the reprise of Paul's guitar solo was just a tape copy of the solo break... Geoff Emerick says George Martin liked it so much that he just redubbed it onto the fadeout.

I'm a bit of a recording dude myself. Today this would be an effortless endeavor. But how was this possible back then? I was under the impression that Sgt Pepper was the first 4 track studio recording. How many tracks did they have on Revolver? And how did they track Paul's guitar solo? This would have been tricky.

Also that's John on "I Want You" (She's So Heavy) and I believe the acoustic solo in "Honey Pie" is John. "Yer Blues" has a John solo too.
