Post Cults and cult-like religions

I just read: Under the Banner of Heaven : A Story of Violent Faith: by Jon Krakauer. This is a short, selective history of Mormanism and the break away
off-shoot Mormon Fundamentalists. At the core of the book is a double murder committed by two fundamentalist brothers, acting on personal "revelations" from God. Two days ago I came across an article about one of the biggest Fundamentalist group building a huge compound in Texas. Sound eerily familiar?
Here is the link to the article:
http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intel...le.jsp?aid=527
I would love to hear from anyone with experience or stories about cults or cult-like religions. Maybe others are interested as well.

Jeffs says that the government is "wicked," as are outsiders and the mainstream Mormon Church (leaders prefer its full name, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS), and that all will soon be stricken from the earth by God's hand.

Ehehe, this made me giggle. This is very interesting...

I read recently in the newspaper that the Morman Fundamentalists are suffering terrible birth defects from too much inbreeding. Their response to all this?

"We're all related anyway."

That was a funny show. It's a shame the actor who played Father Ted passed away, IMO, before the show really took off.

I read a preview for a Simpsons episode in which Homer becomes convinced that the world is going to end and he encourages the residents of Springfield to go into the desert and "meet their maker". My reaction to that was, "who does he think he is? David Koresh?"

lol!

The Simpson episode "The Momentariums" was funny, but gave me the chills at the same time because it echo's the Heaven's Gate cult. If anyone recalls that cult believed that they would meet their maker on another planet and so they all committed suicide.

I was reading this book about cults a few months back. The book describes L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics and Scientology as cults. In learning more about these sects, I think they fit the criteria for cults.

I was just about to bring up Scientology. I really lean toward it being a cult. It's so secretive. You have to actually go to their church to find out anything about them.

I think it IS a cult. The book I read several months ago goes into detail about Scientology and Dianetics and the history behind them.

You can do a search on Amazon for books about cults that were written in recent times and pull up a lot of information.

I heard scientologists put celebrity members all the way to the top level rather quickly.

Post ECKANKAR

I don't know much about ECKANKAR, but about fifteen years ago the whole organization moved to property about a mile and a half from where I used to live. I still live only about four miles away from it.
From what I understand they believe in Soul travel, past lives, and the importance of dreams etc. When they first opened up they had an open house, and I went and looked around, taking a tour. The facility is quite beautiful, and from what I remember, I could stand on the ground level floor and look straight up to the domed top of the structure. It sits on a hill and the view from the top must really be something. They offer classes, but I have never been to one.
It's been said the current leader was led to the property through dreams. Oddly enough, I bought a house very near where they ended up because I felt a special attraction to the land there as well. I used to be able to see the dome of their structure from the top floor of my house.
As for it being a cult, I couldn't say. I have read what the critieria of being a cult is, but it's been some time and can't remember it well. I'll have to look it up again.
