Default The Monkees

I know. I know. I know. A lot of you probably think the same thing I USED to think of the Monkees--that they were completely un-original copycats who were trying to be the Beatles. I used to think that. Before I actually gave them a listen. Since January 19, 2010, I have been a pretty big Monkees fan and have realized that they really aren't that much like the Beatles. I mean, Davy was the only British one, and their hairstyles weren't that alike, and they wore more different outfits and had a TV show, and their music style actually is a lot different.
If you hate the Monkees for any reason, don't even both er posting here, please. :)

If you are a Monkees fan, which is your favorite song? Who is your favorite Monkee? And which is your fave episode of their TV show?
I've only seen 4 (I have the "Our Fave Episodes" DVD where they each picked their fave episode to put on the DVD) but of the four my two fave episodes are Fairy Tale and Hitting the High Seas. Recently ordered the 2nd season on DVD. :) I can't really decide on a fave song... My fave Monkees are prob. Davy and Micky, but I like Peter a lot, too. =)

Well, I have a lot of respect for the Monkees (as did our favorite band around here, by the way). They did some fine records, and their TV show was fairly revolutionary, as it turned out. It greatly influenced the (then) future development of music video.

My favorite Monkee was always Mickey. His singing and his comic TV persona both appealed to me. My favorite Monkee song? I'm not sure. I have several that would be candidates: "Porpoise Song", "As We Go Along", "For Pete's Sake", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer", "Someday Man", "Goin' Down", and "Listen to the Band" are all songs I like a lot.

I guess my true favorite is probably "Daydream Believer". I'm pretty sentimental about that one.

I love The Monkees!

The root of my obsession is from re-runs of the show being on TV when i was a little kiddy and I just loved it - the jokes and the music and everything! Lizzy you have aboslutely got to see more episodes! There are some beauties....I have too many faves to name. One of the ones that I find so funny is when they pretend to be in a biker gang - i can't think of what it's called but it is SO funny and they are all so gorgeous in it.

I really like their music. I think Headquarters is a good album and I know they were pleased with it since it was "theirs" so i like that one but I also love Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.

My fave Monkee - well it's between Micky and Peter. I've met Micky twice and he was totally lovely both times. Made me love him even more!! heeheheheeee!

I just ordered the whole 2nd season online. I'm hoping it will arrive sometime this week. =)

If you love the Beatles, you just about have to like at least some of the Monkees' stuff. As a TV show, they were pretty much modeled after the Beatles, and as singers and musicians, they gravitated towards a lot of the same kinds of ideas that the Beatles were pursuing at that time.

Their best work is certainly worth checking out. Especially the aforementioned Headquarters and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones, Ltd. Those two projects are a must-hear as far as I'm concerned.

They're ok I guess. I like some of their songs. Pleasant Valley Sunday is one I like a lot. I like them more as a TV show actually. I used to watch them on MTV. I remember liking Peter a lot cuz he reminded me of Ringo. And Micky can be quite funny.

I had a lot of records of The Monkees in the 60's and love their music. The TV things were great fun too

Smile The Monkees

This is an interesting thread. I think this group were very good. My mother and I both really enjoy listening to their song 'Daydream Believer' and her favourite was Peter Tork. Personally, my favourite Monkee is the former jockey...

they were very good. i get sick of a lot of people who go on about how they didn't play on their early records. so what? that was pretty normal back then.

great pop songs, my favourite being 'randy scouse git'.

Session players did the studio tracks for a lot of the bands back then. It was no big deal.

I've seen the whole 2nd season now (I have it on DVD) and my sis and I make it a point to try to watch at least one episode every night now that I'm on summer vacation. =) I think I've settled on Davy and Peter as my top two, but I love them all to bits. They're all hilarious and talented. =)

I feel Mickey's voice was the band's biggest attribute; he gave them a wonderful Pop sound.

The songwriting was excellent Pop-craft by some of the best pens at the time. Mike would go on to write some superb songs as well.

They all gelled together so well on screen and vinyl.

For me, Pleasant Valley Sunday was when the sound was really clicking on all cylinders.

Excellent Pop band.

Wink Interesting Monkee fact...

According to Wikipedia, Mike Nesmith’s mother invented the typewriter correction fluid, later known commercially as Liquid Paper, when he was 13 years old.
