Default The Essentials in Beatle Reading!

I recently purchased a copy of "The Beatles LIVE" by Mark Lewisohn and documents ALL their contracted live shows from Quarrymen to Candlestick Park. (The Apple rooftop does count as a PAID appearance)

Therefore, I have determined that the following books are essential to one's Beatle collection:

The Beatles Recording Sessions-Mark Lewisohn
The Beatles Live-Mark Lewisohn
Ultimate Beatles Guide-(forgot the authors' name but the paperback version has got a hideous cover of the lads with distorted faces)
The Beatles Anthology-The Beatles

These books are more listings of facts than for general reading but if you want to know everything and more, these are for you!

There may be others that are better reading but to me, THESE are factual, complete and a neccesity. They are not filled with made-up stories or character assasinations.

Any other views?

Don't forget Hunter Davies' 1967 Beatles' biography and the updated version! That is like the first best introduction to the Beatles.

I admit that I am hooked on "The Beatles Anthology." That was the best present I got this Christmas and I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! Mere words do not do this excellent tome justice. The Beatles themselves are what make the book the unrivaled masterpiece that it is; it is really THEIR story being told by THEM. It is a book Beatles' fans have been praying for!

I give it a hearty endorsement replete with a round of thunderous applause and a heartfelt YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!

A few other's I'd recommend are:

- "A Hard Day's Write: The stories behind every Beatles song" by Steve Turner
- "Revolution In The Head" by Ian Macdonald
- "Lennon: The Definitive Biography" by Ray Coleman
- "The John Lennon Encyclopedia" By Bill Harry

and, of course...

- "THe Ultimate Beatles Encyclopedia" also by Bill Harry

The Quite One - A life of George Harrison, by Alan Clayson

I have a Keith Badman's After the break-up 1970-2001 edition.

------------------
George in I Me Mine; 'I met Kissinger and Ford. Ford was very friendly, Kissinger looked like an Arab, talked like a German and was tanned all over, like Clark Gable, he was a bit like Charlie Chaplin, like a Rutle.

Has anybody read "The Beatles, Lennon, and Me" written 1st hand by Pete Shotton? He was one of John's "cronies" as kids and throughout Beatle years until Yoko put the kibosh on John hanging out with friends.

Yeah, I got that one and thought of adding it to my list becoz Pete Shotten seems like a pretty up-and-honest guy. It's a very good book too. Good choice!

Yes, I have it. It's another of those books I forgot to mention earlier. A very good read.

Those ARE excellent books. A recent book that I love is the Turner book,"A Hard Day's Write" on the Beatles. He treats his topic with the utmost respect and this is a book you will love. It is a must have for any Beatles afficionado.

Hey, Bangs, what is the title, and I'll check it out? It sounds (from your description) like one worth getting into.

Ooh, I beg to differ on that one. Seemed like that was the first (though not, by far, the worst) of a bunch of muckrakers. Paul himself always referred to the author as "Norma Phillips".
