Theatre Within, a not-for-profit committed to furthering the role of the performing arts as a positive social force, is offering two, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to help make its 33rd Annual John Lennon Tribute, scheduled for December 6 at Symphony Space in New York, a reality.
In partnership with Charity Buzz.com, Theatre Within is offering fans a way to support its long-running Tribute celebrating Lennon’s music and timeless message of peace. The organization has arranged for two unique experiences, one with Bob Gruen, the acclaimed rock photographer and good friend of Lennon’s, and Sam Viviano, MAD Magazine Art Director and frequent cover artist.
Photo Session and Tour of the Studio and Archives of Rock Photo Great Bob Gruen: This first auction offers fans the opportunity to a photo taken of them and a friend, by legendary Bob Gruen, after a tour of his private studio and archives in New York City. Bob is without question one of rock music's truly legendary photographers, best known for his stunning photographs of John Lennon during their close friendship in the 1970s, including the iconic Statue of Liberty portrait. He has photographed rocks biggest superstars, including Elvis, Bob Dylan, Debbie Harry, Bob Marley, Tina Turner and Madonna!
Have Your Caricature Drawn, After a Private Lunch with, Legendary MAD Magazine Artist Sam Vivano: It’s on record that Lennon himself was a huge fan of the irreverent MAD Magazine, and this auction enables you support the longest running-annual musical tribute to his legacy by being immortalized in a drawing by its renowned Art Director. Sam Viviano has been contributing to MAD since 1980, producing movie and TV show satires, parody commercials and, of course, covers! This is the chance for you and a friend to be immortalized by Viviano’s pen and to join him for lunch where he will give you the inside skinny on decades of the mad history of MAD Magazine.
In recent years Theatre Within’s Annual John Lennon Tribute has raised money to fund education programs for homeless children, build music schools in the Third World and support WhyHunger’s Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign which has raised millions of dollars to feed the hungry around the world. Over the years, these events has presented some of rock’s greatest talents saluting Lennon by covering his songs, including Judy Collins, Jackson Browne, Joan Osborne, Aimee Mann, Bettye Lavette and many more.
