I have to agree with everyone that has said that John looked WAY too thin at the time of his death. This feeling always gets in the way of me enjoying photos of him during the Double Fantasy period. He looks so happy in them expression-wise to be back in the studio, and interviews from that time seem to indicate that he had reached a new level of contentment in his life...yet he is so painfully thin. I would only hope that he might have rejected the whole microbiotic diet thing soon after. I think it was part of his character to embrace some things fully (such as the Mahareshi, or Apple) but then reject them later on when he no longer believed in them. I think there is a quote in the Anthology book of Paul's where he says something to the effect of "...by the time we (he, George and Ringo) had caught up, John was off around the next bend." Some hopefully this microbiotic diet would have been one of his many passing phases.

I love what you wrote in that really long post, Angel. I know you meant every word of it. Beautifully put. All of you guys expressed yourselves beautifully, actually. John has some great fans.
I also read about John's autopsy report...he wasn't doing drugs a the time. Maybe John was just so darn happy about going back to music that he skipped a few meals, for several weeks...or a month or so. You never know. Emotional people, like John appeared to be, can react to certain things in strange ways.
Anyway, my feeling sad for John has slightly dissipated. I still think many of those pics are quite worrisome, but I'll try not to think about it as much.

John was not using drugs at the time of his death. The autopsy stated that he was completely clean. That is fact. He was, however, on a macrobiotic diet, as has been discussed before...which certainly accounts for his "spareness."

I agree with Angel when I say that I truly believe that at the time of his death, for once in his life, John was truly happy. He had more or less conquered a lot of the demons that had plagued him throughout his life, and he had found his place of bliss, and he was happy. And God knows no one deserved to be happy more than John...because for all the fame and success and material wealth he had, he WASN'T truly happy for a lot of his life, and so much of his art was channelled into cries for help or other outbursts...and yet, no one really paid attention. It's kind of sad, really...and so when he finally, FINALLY reached that place of contentment, God knows it was hard-earned.

Yes, that picture is difficult for me to look at -- I admit that he looks too skinny for me to be entirely comfortable with it. But -- I don't think he was miserable or unhappy...and I don't think he'd have STAYED so gaunt over a period of time.

I agree John has some great fans.

I don't feel sad for John, I know he was happy I guess its because weight is a personal issue for me that it slowly bothered me. Anyway, I agree with LuvLennon that John dove into things head first and was either "sink or swim" and that as history serves that he saw something/someone became magnetically drawn and then obsessed to a certain extent until he got enlightened or let down. So I think this macrobiotic thing would have been just a phase, because I did some research on it because I was contemplating on trying it...and its not very healthy for long term use at all.

It seems Johns only vices at the end were chocolates and cigarettes. I can relate. But really, its very hard to be unhappy when you have a beautiful 5 year olds smiling face waiting for you when you get home. Thats how I feel about my kids, and I'm sure John felt this about his Sean.

John was not fat -- he was slightly stocky and he had a fuller face in those days (Moptop Era - Ford Falcon era) than his bandmates.

Stand him next to ectomorphic, almost gaunt George and he is considerably larger, but he was not an unreasonable size. Sad John had a poor self image - I thought he was so adorable in Help! as many people did.

I was just talking about this a day or two ago with some friends!
But I agree,
Chubby cheeks work extremely well for John (:
(And they where absolutely adorable too!)

I personally think he wouldn't look the least bit aged when Abbey Road came around if he would have kept a bit of chub-chub (:
I do think it made him look tuns older when he lost some weight.

Lucky John!
He looks better with the fat! (if you could call it fat)
Id kill to eat a pound of ice cream, insisting it would make me look better (:

John was pinchably cute, that Cheeky Chief Beatle!

Did John eat pounds of ice cream in those days, 5Grace?

I never found John fat at all, skinny maybe, especially during the Yoko years but in 1965 to which John dubbed it the "fat Elvis" year? No. Maybe he felt fat, he did say he was eating like a pig...well remember he was smoking pot! Pot makes you eat (well, it did for me). Even so, he certainly never got as big as Elvis did.

Me neither. I never considered him to be fat. Obviously he felt that in his own mind but I never saw it.

Erm, "fat Elvis" is many female Beatle fans favourite John period. C'mon, he's a complete and utter sweetie in all the pics from around the time! But then again I adore fat Beardy Paul...I know it's well documented but it's the chunky looks I like! :-)

John is certainly the hottest "Fat Elvis" I've ever seen. He was much too hard on himself.

I remember reading that John said of that so-called fat period that he was "living on bacon and scotch".
I love a good highly peated scotch like Laphroaig but not enough to get fat on, bourbon on the other hand is a different story so I work out to burn off those bourbon calories.

I'm into weight gain and I write Beatles weight gain fantasies, especially John. I once wrote to Dan Savage about this and he accused me of being a guy posing as a girl because no girl is into weight gain.

I thought, "I am so cool. I confused Dan Savage"

I read that he said "I was eating like a pig, too much red wine and meat". That's the reason why apparantly he reduced his meat consumation in 1966.
