Default Traveling Ringberry

Ringo recorded the song "I Call Your Name" in 1990 with amongst others Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.

What was the main purpose for the recording, meaning... it was supposed to be used for 'something'

For what?

According to the John Lennon encyclopedia:

A major concert was held in John's memory at the Pier Head, Liverpool on Saturday 5 May 1990. Yoko requested that the proceeds be donated to the Greening of the World John Lennon Scholarship Fund and the Spirit Foundation UK.
Two former Beatles donated video clips, which were screened during the concert, along with an oral message. They were Paul McCartney with 'P.S. Love Me Do' (a medley of 'Love Me Do' and 'P.S. I Love You'), filmed at a Tokyo concert in March 1990, and Ringo with 'I Call Your Name', which he'd recently recorded in Los Angeles.
