Weren't there some pirate radio stations off the coast of England in the early-mid sixties that helped get a greater diversity of music played to British audiences? Music they would never have heard had they had only the BBC? I understand these stations started up because big companies had a lock on what got played on so-called legitimate radio.
I firmly believe that artists should not be ripped off, that they should be paid fairly for their creations, but I also believe a lot more discussion is necessary before any final conclusions can be drawn. And it's pretty common knowledge that big companies have a lot of control over radio, placement in stores, downloads, etc.
The music industry, just like any other industry, has to face realities of the new tech, and figure out how to deal with it fairly. Perhaps if pricing is fair, people will be more likely to stay legal--after all, if someone likes an artist, they won't want to rip them off.

The corollary is true too--think of the literal BILLIONS of $$ in bootlegs over the last how many years. Think of what they/Apple would be worth if they'd released the BBC stuff/studio stuff/Shea/Let It Be/etc. a looong time ago.

^ Thanks!! Glad to have a fellow traveler. I think John Lennon would have been a great party leader!
