(Memphis 6/21/2011) Robert Bull is a music lover touring the Rock 'N Soul Museum in downtown Memphis.

He's from just outside of Liverpool, England and he's traveled from across the pond, the Atlantic Ocean, because of his love of Memphis music.

Bull said, "Blues music, really. We're into Blues music where we live."

That type of music interest is why Memphis and Liverpool are teaming up to encourage tourists to connect the home of Elvis Presley to the home of the Fab Four, the Beatles.

John Doyle is the executive director of Memphis Rock 'N Soul Museum.

Doyle said, "It's a match that's been 50 years in the making ever since music exploded in Memphis that changed the whole culture. Liverpool embraced that and obviously the Beatles really embraced what was happening here in Memphis."

The idea was born in Memphis in 2004 during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Rock n' Roll.

Kevin Kane is president of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Kane said, "During the 50 years of Rock 'N Roll we partnered with Liverpool. It was just a marriage made in heaven. Obviously, if Elvis was chapter one, the Beatles were chapter 2 and when you look at all the similarities between Memphis and Liverpool it's just a natural fit."

Some say it's a natural fit because many artists from the UK were influenced by Memphis music that was recorded at places like Stax Records in the 1960s.

Tim Sampson is communications director for Soulsville Foundation at the Stax Museum.

Sampson said, "Everybody in the UK loves the music that came out of Memphis and a lot of people here love the music that came out of the UK particularly the Beatles out of Liverpool so it's just a natural that Memphis and Liverpool have this sister city relationship."

Robert Bull says its relationship that is a perfect musical fit.

Bull said, "Certainly yeah, some of our friends have already been here and we came on their recommendations, two good friends of ours have been to Memphis."

The cultural exchange will begin in a few weeks when a Beatles exhibit opens at the Rock 'N Soul Museum in a few weeks and in September a delegation will travel to Liverpool as the two cities become rock and soul mates

Yes, I've read about this and thought of you, wallrus! My one night in Memphis, we did listen to some blues... probably on Beale Street, I don't recall. But I bet there's great blues even away from the touristy places... probably even better?

i can get you in a real juke joint on the edge of a field that grows cotton or soybeans....name..Po Monkey's.

but my favorite is Hopson Plantation Comminsary, it's a cool place and doesn't just play the blues they have R&R also. like this guy.

young guy ..watched him grow up...he's playing all the instruments here i think.

he was influenced by the beatles, neil young, dylan, bruce... you know the usual suspects if you grow up in a house where your dad is a local legend and grew up in the 60s.

it's fun to watch them play a festival together when they follow each other....they just switch spots and change band leaders, very amusing..two talented guys and rich teaches kids to play the blues at the delta blues museum in the afternoon.
