Oh my god, Scruff, what a beautiful gift that is!
Poor Oscar, how he would have LOVED the 60's. He was so ahead of his time.
Imagine being that spirited, witty, beauty-loving soul stuck in dreary Victorian London. He absolutely blew their minds. That's why they destroyed him (albeit with a LOT of help from Oscar himself by bringing his ill-advised libel suit against the Marquess of Queensbury--but that's another topic).
Oscar and Bosie sampled hashish, as well as sampling several beautiful young men, on their trip to Algiers. Oscar wrote of his hashish experience: "Just two puffs and all is peace and love."
And don't get me started on Oscar's love for flowers....
Yes, Sean has picked up a LOT of the Wildean style, but I think, really, it came back with a vengeance in the 1960's--the velvet, the silks, the color, and the ambisexual self-expression. And you have posted some absolutely beautiful examples.

Gawd, I am drifting OT but I recall you saying in a comment you made about Yoko and John's relationship (can't remember where you said it) that Bosie was considered as bad an influence by some and Yoko was on John. Were Oscar and Bosie artistic partners as well as lovers? Oh wilde, I have so many questions and I believe it deserves it's own thread because it is sort of about Oscar Wilde but then also about John.

Oscar would concur, although he'd couch his language in something considerably more....floral. Pale lily, jonquil, Fleur-de-Lys, Narcissus, with red rose-leaf lips or something along those lines.

As for Bosie being an artistic partner like Yoko was to John...the answer is, yes and no. Or both/and. Let's just say that people who like to discuss this topic continue to debate the merits of Bosie's contribution to or detraction from Oscar's artistic acheivements and the quality of Oscar's life. People get quite heated discussing the merits (or lack thereof) of Bosie.
I tell you what. The next week is kind of hectic (really?) but I told several people I'd do a comparison thread as soon as the holidays were over. I'm thinking maybe a week from now, 12/26; maybe earlier if time permits.

Yes I know. Oscar would consider me quite vulgar. And I would probably tell him off.
Actually, we'd probably be good friends with lots of words and drinks between us.

Ah, he wouldn't mind. He just was....floral when it came to describing physical beauty. However, some naughty photos of young unclothed men were found among his things when he died, so he certainly wasn't "pure."
John's language was a lot more...earthy. I remember being kind of shocked at all the
f-bombs he dropped into regular conversation when I read the Hunter Davies bio when I was 13. Then again, in my family, ladies were never to say anything off-color. My sister & got punished if we ever used the word "fart". That was a dirty word. So reading all those f-bombs in a book was quite an experience!
And I can swear like a sailor now!

The only Japanese work I know that is vaguely off-color is hekoki (not sure of spelling). Means a person who always farts, or at least that is what a Japanese exchange student living with us told me back in 1978. I used to know how to count from 1-10 in Japanese but I forgot.

Dang Maia. You reminded me that I abandoned Yoko's fashion thread. I'll get back to it soon!

Äh-hmmm... you're kidding, dear Scruffie, aren't you ?
It's strange: On one hand, I like this photo-session of John wearing a kimono. On the other hand, it's not his most sexy look, isn't it ? And this hair-cut; far too long at the back
The kimono doesn't really suit John I think, as it makes John look even thinner, than he actually was. It suits Yoko quite well, but John ?? Honestly ?

I am not kidding. I bought him a few Ermenegildo Zegna floral ties and he wears them all the time! I mean, it's not something he would go for himself, so he can THANK ME.
As far as the kimono on John, I do love it. But perhaps this one is a bit too large for him? I think he could have had a better fitted one. Or perhaps this was already altered for his body and he lost even more weight...
I LOVE John's hair in these pics...Snoopy!!!

I happen to LOVE John's whole "Shogun" photoshoot.
Looking at these FANTASTIC photos of John (that second photo of him posing, arms akimbo, in such a "John-like" pose my throat catches--for some reason he seems terribly, terribly VULNERABLE in that shot, even though his pose is cheerfully arrogant) reminds me of another John and Yoko-ish facet in the fall of 1980. That fall, NBC ran a mini-series based on the Clavell novel Shogun, starring Richard Chamberlain as Capt. John Bunthorne and Yoko Shimada as Lady Toda Mariko, the star-crossed lovers of the series. It was a wonderfully-made film.
Of course I watched every episode and thought of John and Yoko the entire time. I often wondered if they watched it too: John, the son of a seafarer who himself had recently sailed on a dangerous journey to Bermuda, and the love of his life, decended from one of the most exclusive and important families in Japan...some interesting paralells.
I find it moving that he immersed himself in Japanese culture and loved and admired it so much. Sean says he remembers John wearing a kimono around the house.
I love the hair and the kimono in this photo session and I think he's stylin' here.

Oh, I see... The funny GIF says it all
Well, as you say, the kimono may be too big-sized for John, it just doesn't fit him right, like it does for Yoko The hair-cut isn't that bad, it's just that I much more prefer John's hair-cut from the Leibovitz-photo sessions.
