Default John and the Japanese language

I remember reading somewhere that shortly after marrying Yoko, John began to learn Japanese. How much of the language did he learn? Any info you can post about John and his study of Japanese culture, customs, and language would be much appreciated! Thanks!

There was a little book a few years ago (it's out of print now) called "Ai: Japan Through John Lennon's Eyes: A Personal Sketchbook" that was a little sketchbook/language aid that John had created for himself when they were in Japan.

I found some info about it on Amazon, there was one customer review:

This book is the only English picture book that introduces Japanese that I have ever seen. John's sketches show his understanding of the Japanese language well. What also makes the book special is John's position in Japanese life. He learned Japanese as a foreigner looking at Japan.

Reading it will be a source of enjoyment for everybody whether beginner or advanced in Japanese.

Thank you John for such a wonderful expression of Ai.

I have a copy, and it's sweet -- you might want to see if you can find a copy on eBay or in a used bookstore or something, it'll give you an idea of how John was attempting to learn Japanese.

I remember hearing a radio interview sometime in 1980 where Yoko said that she and John went to a Japanese restaurant and he ordered in Japanese and had a fluent discussion with their waitperson, so I guess he was pretty good at it.
He once mentioned to me that "Ringo" meant "apple" in Japanese.

Freda...you might want to try the Japanese/Beatle museum-"GETBACK" website: www.rrm.co.jp/world
and see if maybe they have the book in print. May I also recommend this great book, well actually it's a photo book called: JOHN LENNON-A FAMILY ALBUM. The photographer is Nishi F.Saimaru, it's got great photos of John, Yoko and toddler Sean while they were vacationing there. I'ts pretty obvious that John was very relaxed and got along very well w/ the Japanese people. The only thing-it's all in Japanese tho. But the photos practically say everything! Good Luck on getting that book you wanted.
