Default Songs For John

I was thinking of what were the songs Paul, Richie and George written for John after he died... I just recalled All Those Years Ago and Here Today, as immediate songs... what has Richie done? It's something that is escaping from my mind right now (and I think I have never known the song, as well)

I don't think Ritchie wrote a song himself about John... There was a similar topic on this on the Goodnight Vienna Forum though. Let me check.

Here it is:
http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/Forum...000047.html#14

Apparently he didn't write any songs for John though.

That made me think -- how many songs were actually written by John... outside The Beatles and after his death? I can recall a couple now:

-- "Life Is Real (Song For Lennon)", by Queen on the Hot Space album
-- "Not Now John", by Pink Floyd on the Final Cut album
-- "Edge Of Seventeen" (partially inspired by John's death), by Stevie Nicks on the Bella Donna album

-- not more, but surely there are many. Any info?

This is a really great song. If I'm not mistaken, the subtitle is "Can Johnny Come Out And Play?"

Me too Kat. And since I haven't
heard it for a while and have a video clipping of it, I checked it out again-- the
song is just great I'll agree, but the video
I think could've been done better. To me,
the subject matter should have been dealt with more sensitively on video-- it was a
bit too "Elton Show" for my tastes.

I recall The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon. Sting also had one but I can't remember the title. He did it live for the concert for New York fundraiser concert.

Some lyrics... First the Pink Floyd one:

Not Now John
(Waters)

F*** all that
We've got to get on with these
Got to compete with the wily japanese
There's too many home fires burning
And not enough trees
So f*** all that
We've got to get on with these

Can't stop, lose job, mind gone ,silicon
What bomb, get away, pay day, make hay
Break down, need fix, big six
Clickity click, hold on, oh no
Brrrrrrrrrring bingo!

Make 'em laugh, make 'em cry, make 'em dance in the aisles
Make 'em pay, make 'em stay, make 'em feel OK

Not nah John
We've got to get on with the film show
Hollywood waits at the end of the rainbow
Who cares what it's all about
As long as the kids go
Not now John
Got to get on with the show

Hang on John
We've got to get on with this
I don't know what it is
But it fits on here like this...
Come at the end of the shift
We'll go and get pissed
But not now John
I've got to get on with this

Hold on John
I think there's something good on
I used to read books but...
It could be the news
Or some other abuse
Or it could be reusable shows

F*** all that
We've got to get on with these
Got to compete with the wily japanese
No need to worry about the vietnamese
Got to bring the russian bear to his knees
Well, maybe not the russian bear
Maybe the swedes
We showed Argentina
Now let's go and show these
Make us feel tough
And won't Maggie be pleased
Nah nah nah nah nah nah!

s'cusi dove il bar
se para collo pou eine toe bar
s'il vous plait ou est le bar
oi' where's the f****** bar john!

Now the Queen one:

Life Is Real (Song For Lennon)
(Mercury)

Guilt stains on my pillow
Blood on my terraces
Torsos in my closet
Shadows from my past

Life is real
Life is real
Life is real
So real

Sleeping is my leisure
Waking up in a minefield
Dream is just a pleasure dome
Love is a roulette wheel

Life is real
Life is real
Life is real
Oh yeah

Success is my breathing space
I brought it on myself
I will price it, I will cash it
I can take it or leave it

Loneliness is my hiding place
Breast feeding myself
What more can I say
I have swallowed the bitter pill
I can taste it, I can taste it

Life is real
Life is real
Life is real

Music will be my mistress
Loving like a whore
Lennon is a genius
Living in every pore

Life is real
Life is real
Life is real
So real

Life is cruel
Life is a b****
Life is real
So real

Life is real
Life is real
Life is real

Now Ms. Stevie Nicks.

Edge Of Seventeen
(Nicks)

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Whoo... whoo... whoo...
Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

And the days go by...
Like a strand in the wind...
In the web that is my own...
I begin again
Said to my friend, baby...
Nothin' else mattered

He was no more... than a baby then
Well he... seemed broken hearted...
Something within him
But the moment... that I first laid...
Eyes... on... him... all alone...
On the edge of... seventeen

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
ooo baby... ooo... said ooo...
Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

I went today... maybe I will go again...
Tomorrow
And the music there it was hauntingly...
Familiar
And I see you doing...
What I try to do for me
With the words from a poet...
And the voice from a choir
And a melody... nothing else mattered

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
ooo baby... ooo... said ooo
Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

The clouds... never expect it...
When it rains
But the sea changes colours...
But the sea...
Does not change
And so... with the slow... graceful flow...
Of age
I went forth... with an age old...
Desire... to please
On the edge of... seventeen

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo
Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

Well then suddenly...
There was no one... left standing
In the hall... yeah yeah...
In a flood of tears
That no one really ever heard fall at all
Oh I went searchin' for an answer...
Up the stairs... and down the hall
Not to find an answer...
Just to hear the call
Of a nightbird... singing...
Come away... come away...

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo... baby ooo... said ooo
Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo... baby ooo... said ooo

Well I hear you in the morning...
And I hear you...
At nightfall...
Sometime to be near you...
Is to be unable... to hear you...
My love...
I'm a few years older than you...

Just like the white winged dove...
Sings a song...
Sounds like she's singing...
Ooo baby... ooo... said ooo

Now Sir Elton John (is he a Sir already?)

Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny)
(John/Taupin)

What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh and I've been calling oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear
Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name

Johnny can't you come out to play in your empty garden

Thanks for posting the lyrics, darkhorse! Now I can clearly see the "Edge of Seventeen" connection; didn't know about it before.
