I am sorry but I dig "Friend Of Dorothy" and always have. I know some people aren't into it because of it's quality, but I love the actual composition and the seemingly playful aspect of the lyrics enough to tune the hiss/distortion of the recording out. I think it's a perky song with a drop of dissension- maybe in the vocal?

Written in 1963 while in Spain with Brian Epstein, this was given immediately to Billy J. Kramer and became a smash for him. However, I personally prefer John's version. I love the feeling in his voice. It's quite a saccharine lyric, but he somehow gives it that edge with his delivery.
If you ever leave me, I'll be sad and blue
Don't you ever leave me, I'm so in love with you
The birds in the sky would be sad and lonely,
If they knew that I lost my one and only,
They'd be sad if you're bad to me
The leaves on the trees would be softly sighin'
If they heard from the breeze that you left me cryin',
They'd be sad, don't be bad to me
But I know you won't leave me 'cos you told me so,
And I've no intention of letting you go,
Just as long as you let me know, you won't be bad to me
So the birds in the sky won't be sad and lonely,
'Cos they know that I got my one and only
They'd be glad that you're not bad to me
They'd be glad that you're not bad to me, to me, to me

I remember Kramer's version, but it was years later before I knew John wrote it!
Next up, another song from the Free as a Bird tape. This one shows real promise!
Lyrics:
Well she used to be an artist
but she threw away the key
Got a job, you know, 9 to 5
And the most peculiar people
hang around her everyday
Bunch of slobs, you know the kind
Now she's coming from nowhere
keeps herself in the dark
Hides her head in a scarf
got her books in a shawl
Whatever happened to
the woman we once knew
the river's rising fast
And if she hears me now
trying to get a message somehow
don't burn the boats till last
Well, she used to be a swinger,
now the rope's around her neck
Such a shame, ain't that a shame
And her mother was a lawyer,
taught her how to read a check
You know the game, who's to blame
Going nowhere ah
she keeps herself in the dark
Hides her head in the scarf
got her hooks in the shawl
Whatever happened to
the woman we once knew
the river's rising fast
And if she's listening now
trying to get a message somehow
don't burn the boat it's built to last
Well she used to be an artist
but she threw away the key
Got a job, you know, 9 to 5
The most peculiar people
hang around her everyday
Bunch of slobs, you know the kind
Going nowhere, ah
she keeps herself in the dark
Hides her head in the scarf
got her books in the shawl
Whatever happened to
the woman we once knew
the river's rising fast
Ah, if she's listening now
trying to get a message somehow
and the boat is burning fast

Something is wrong

Something is wrong
All you need to do is say this word
I know it sounds absurd but it's true
The magic's in the mantra
we'll give you all the answers
So swallow it, that's all you got to do..."
Snoopy, I just jotted down the lyrics from listening to the track and I think the "something is wrong" part could have been a beautiful chorus to a song, or the nucleus for a great song. However, my fave part is him ripping off "Blow Away" (because you know he was checking out what his bros were doing) and inadvertently creating his own, equally fierce set of lyrics. Oh John... Whether a dig or a plug, George would have been flattered.

This is one of my all-time favorites by John. I love the entire rhythm of this song. I love the verses, his singing, and I used to play this one on my iPod consistently, since I had the Dakota Demos and it was on there. This version seems better than the one I have for some reason.
I also have to say: this thread RAWKS MY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know, the quality isn't very good, still I think it's not a bad song. Does anybody know this song; opinions about (especially the lyrics) ?
If I've got it right, this song is considered 'new' and only available on the Living on Borrowed Time bootleg, which is where the youtube clip is taken from. Actually, what has happened is somebody split off the Something is Wrong part from The Happy Rishikesh Song, which it has been bundled together with on the Bermuda demo of that song. That one's up next!
Btw, I don't think the Blow Away rip is part of John's composition though but something he just played to clear his mind or something.

Okay, The Happy Rishikesh Song. It first saw it's beginning in 1968 when John came back from India. From that time comes this demo.
1968 lyrics:
All you need to do is to sing this little word.
I know it sounds obsurd but its true
The magics in the mantra will give you all the answers
So swallow this thats all you gotta do.
Everything you need is here
Everything thats not here's not there
And if there's somethin' missin' in this god almighty plan
Could it be you need a woman?
All you need to do is to sing this little word.
I know it sounds obsurd but its true
The magics in the mantra will give you all the answers
So swallow this thats all you gotta do.
Everything you need is here
Everything thats not here's not there
And if there's somethin' missin' in this god almighty plan
Could it be you need a woman?
Well all you need to do is to say this little word.
I know it sounds obsurd but its true
The magics in the mantra will give you all the answers
So swallow this that's all you gotta do.
John: Take three times a day after every meal
All you need to do is to say this little word.
I know it sounds obsurd but its true
The magics in the mantra will give you all the answers
So swallow this that's all you gotta do
But John hadn't forgotten the song and 1980 when on Bermuda, he recorded this version, which ends in the aforementioned Something Is Wrong.
Lyrics of 1980 version:
"Alright, 'The Happy Rishikesh Song':"
All you need to do is to say this little word
I know it sounds absurd, but it's true
The magic's in the mantra, will give you all the answers
So swallow this, that's all you gotta do
Everything you need is here
And everything that's not here is not there
And yet there's something missing in this God almighty plan
Could it be you need a woman?
Now, all you need to do is to say this little word
I know it sounds absurd, but it's true
The magic's in the mantra, will give you all the answers
So swallow this, that's all you gotta do
Everything you need is here
And everything that's not here is not there
And yet there's something missing in this God almighty plan
Could it be you need the woman? — Well?
All you need to do is to say this little word
I know it sounds absurd, but it's true
The magic's in the mantra, will give you all the answers
So swallow this, that's all you gotta do
"Take three times a day after every meal."
All you need to do is to say this little word
I know it sounds absurd, but it's true
The magic's in the mantra, will give you all the answers
So swallow this, that's all you gotta do
"But still..."
Feel so suicidal, something is wrong
Just can't ***, something is wrong
Oo-hoo
Something is wrong
Something is wrong
Something is wrong

Snoopy, girl... you don't want to know my opinion on the lyrics of that song, so I shall take the fifth. (American slang... it means I'll keep my mouth shut! )

I believe the two versions you posted are the same recording, except one has reverb and the other one doesn't. Listen at about 0:54, it's really obvious there. ("So swallow this that's aaall you gotta do")

These confusing bootlegs are going to drive me mad! (Why do I hear somebody saying "How can they do something you already are? ) I KNOW there are more than one version and I thought the two posted on Youtube were different but I guess I was wrong. Again. I do have versions of this song from different eras. Have to listen through them again to determine which is which. Sheesh!

Hib, please. I can't even sort them chronologically or even know which is which and I get a little confused with all the versions...I'm glad we're all discussing this and it's helping me a LOT. Trust me. I know I should be getting the W&B analysis together but this thread is so distracting...I'll get to it.

Thank's for the lyrics; Scruffie I always wonder where do you find them all...
Honestly, I don't get it what about the song is...? I find the lyrics a bit scaring as he says "suicide" at the beginning And why George would have been flattered ?
I believe she was referring to the snippet of the Happy Rishikesh Song that was on at the end of the video you posted. It sounds similar to George's Blow Away, which was of course released after the HRS was written but the actual demo you posted sounds very similar. Didn't you hear it?

Now I really wanna know your opinion....one of those "bumps in the road" songs?
Yes, pretty much. John called them "troughs." I call it depression.
My question would be when did he write Something is Wrong? Was it one of those India-era songs or is it a Dakota demo? Is it a precursor to Yer Blues or I'm Losing You?
I also have trouble keeping the demos straight...

The hook in "Blow Away" is certainly consistent with this song.

Absolutely. And some people may get all anxious and want to know which was composed first and all that-which is fine- but I actually rather love them both and profusely enjoy them separate or even back-to-back. ngl...
