Paul McCartney to Stage New York Benefit Concert for Firefighters
NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2001--PAUL McCARTNEY is to stage a
benefit concert in New York next month in aid of the city's firefighters.
Paul, who has been in New York since The World Trade Center disaster,
announced the benefit show today (Friday) on New York's WPLJ radio station.
Said Paul: "I was here in New York when the disaster happened. I was
actually on a plane, on the tarmac, when the pilot said it'd all been closed
down. I've been here in New York ever since and, in a way, I was pleased to
be here to witness all the heroism.
"At the time of the disaster I was flying home in order to plan a concert
that I was going to do in Russia, in Red Square in October. But that doesn't
seem appropriate now, so I've postponed that."
"But what I am going to do is to do a concert here in New York within the
next month to benefit all the firemen. I also have a connection there,
because my father was a fireman in Liverpool during World War II. Anyway, we
are looking at venues in New York now to do this benefit concert next
month."
Paul added: "I'd also just like to take a second to say to all the people of
New York - God bless everyone and good luck to us all and thanks to all of
the heroes and heroines who've been helping with the situation."
During World War II, Paul's father Jim McCartney was a volunteer fireman in
Liverpool. Between August 1940 and January 1942, Liverpool endured 68
air-raids, which killed or injured more than 4,500 of the population and
completely destroyed more that 10,000 homes in the city.

Re: Paul to stage NY benefit concert
About this I found an article in the Rolling Stone
McCartney to Aid NYFD
Former Beatle to stage benefit concert
Paul McCartney will perform a concert in New York City to benefit the city's firefighters in the next month.
McCartney was on board a plane on a New York City airport runway when terrorists hijacked two planes and flew them into the World Trade Center's twin towers last week, and has been in the city since the tragedy. McCartney told New York's WPLJ radio station today that he was headed back to the U.K. to plan a concert for Red Square in Moscow, which he has since postponed.
"I am going to do a concert here in New York within the next month to benefit all firemen," McCartney said. "I also have a connection there, because my father was a fireman in Liverpool during World War II. I'd also just like to take a second to say to all the people of New York, God bless everyone and good luck to us all, and thanks to all of the heroes and heroines who've been helping with the situation."
McCartney is currently looking into NYC venues to host the event.
The former Beatle has also completed work on his next album, Driving Rain, his first collection of new material in four years, due out November 13th.

Sure did, JCB...let's keep our eyes and ears peeled for information.
I have this feeling, though, that the tix are going to be very expensive, depending on where he manages to do this...if it's a small venue, they'll have to charge more money per ticket in order to make any money for the fund. (Though if Paul and his people are smart, they'll do this at a large venue like Madison Square Garden and charge reasonable prices to a LOT of people, instead of a small place where they charge a lot of money to a select few...let's see how they handle this!

Re: Paul to stage NY benefit concert
I think that it would be nice (if it were feasible) to do it in Strawberry Fields, NYC.

Probably not feasible, Dominic, unfortunately...Strawberry Fields is very small...a nice sentiment, though!

I know what you mean HMVN., and
I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, if
tickets are too much $, I might sadly have
to pass- But indeed, let's keep our eyes
peeled and hope for the best! I also think
it would be great if he did it outdoors as
well--(i.e. the Great Lawn in CPW-- similar
in a way to Simon & Garfunkel?) perhaps then,
tix wouldn't be so much of a cost too.

I like the idea of staging it out there JC, though I think they probably won't hold it in the Great Lawn for the same reason they didn't stage that prayer service there which was held at Yankees Stadium - initially they did think about where you mentioned, but for 2 main reasons decided against it - firstly the security risk to performers, secondly the impossible task it would be to organise people in and around there in an orderly fashion.
