Default George Harrison car sells for $464,736

George Harrison car sells for $464,736 at UK's largest classic car auction
Sunday, November 4. 2007 |

RM Auction, classic car, aston martin, DB5

The late George Harrison’s first important motor car sold for over $464,000 U.S yesterday in an auction that brought central London to a stand still. The record sale, conducted by preeminent international auction house, RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, saw over $38 million worth of motor cars cross the auction block in what has been dubbed the largest ever sale of its kind in the UK.

BLENHEIM, Ontario, Canada – The unwavering demand for Beatles memorabilia stemmed to cars last night as George Harrison’s legendary Aston Martin DB5 crossed the auction block in Battersea Park, London.

The distinguished DB5, Harrison’s first important motor car, attracted spirited bidding at the London sale, with the gavel falling at an impressive $464, 736, well exceeding its original sales estimate of between $250,000 - $300,000 U.S.

Harrison, the youngest Beatle, was known as much for his love of all things fast as he was a music legend in the world’s most influential bands. A lifelong auto enthusiast and racing fan, he was a regular sight at Formula One and other racing events, and owned several important sports cars, including the platinum 1964 Aston Martin DB5, sold yesterday in London, and a McLaren F1 as seen in the Beatles Anthology film.

As verified by Chris E. Baker, General Manager of Service Operations at Aston Martin Lagona, the Harrison DB5 was constructed in 1964 and delivered by Brian Epstein’s venture “Brydor Cars Ltd” to George Harrison Esq. at his Kinfauns estate, Claremount Park, in Surrey on January 1st 1965. After its brush with Beatles fame, the car found its way into a museum collection in Tokyo, Japan, before being sold and imported to Germany. Yesterday’s sale marked the first time the car has been offered at a public auction.

In addition to Harrison’s former DB5 (Chassis #DB5/1896/R), the auction also offered a host of exquisite motor cars from the esteemed private collections of English Formula 1 mogul, Bernie Ecclestone, Italian businessman Giuseppe Prevosti and international entrepreneur Abba Kogan. In total, the sale saw a record $38 million worth of classic cars cross the block in what is believed to be the largest auction of its kind ever to be held in the UK.

That is an obscene amount of money. That figure will buy you a nice house in just about any state (although that figure would be considered a steal in parts of the Bay Area and in the Boston area).

In re cars, I thought it was so cool that George's sister Lou drove George and Peter around in a 1961 Dodge Dart when George came to America in 1963. I think a Dodge Dart is a much cooler car than the one George owned that sold for that obscene amount of money, but then again I always did like more modest cars and really cool classics.

That is a ridiculous amount of money.
Yeah, I live in the Bay Area, and my house wouldn't even sell for that much, I don't think..

And just how practical is that car, anyway? You couldn't drive it and remain inconsipicuous. I doubt it goes gentle on gas. If you want a good car, look no further than www.honda.com and get yourself an Accord!

Well, I do like that car (I always seem to like oldies), and I think it's much better than that 4 x 4 that we made a campaign against last month to make it go cheap . Anyway, I think that's too much money to spend in a car, no matter who's car it is.

I agree, Coix. And how does the gas mileage stand up in that classic, yet obscenely expensive DB5?

Since we all know George loved to go "Faster," I still think he would have done quite well in a Honda!

Remember the interview from Japan where George arrives (in a BMW? I think) and getting out appologizes, "Sorry it's not a Honda.."

Yeah...the man knew a good car in a Honda, all right.

If you read Rooftop Sessions archives, Lisha Goldberg wrote a story about George being reincarnated as a Honda Accord! I guess it was his way of going faster,

Doesn't matter whose car it was -- Honda is the car for me!

I didn't want it. It didn't have air bags or ABS.

Another car of George has been sold via the internet. The black Mercedes which you can see him in in one of the videos about the Live In Japan rehearsals where he steps out and says "Sorry it's not a Honda". The care used to be Jeff Lynne's.

I'm sorry it isn't a Honda as well. A Honda is a whole sight better IMHO.
