I'm going to put it simply: John STAYED cool. From 1940 to this very day. Always.

Well, this look around 1968 may have been "classic" for the hippie-wave then. Still I think that it was far from being the coolest style in John's life, though it's always a matter of personal taste.
At least, John was often ahead of his time, even in fashion, which is obviously not the case of Sean. What a lack of fantasy to copy the look of his dad from 40 years ago. I find this not only disappointing, but also pretty tasteless

I think John's most interesting period of fashion, based on the transition alone is early 1966 into late 1966.

I'm not sure he's intentionally meaning to copy John, Snoopy. I'm sure that it's hard to avoid comparisons no matter what. If Sean grows a beard: "oh my GAWD no he did not just try to grow a beard like his dad." If he wears glasses of any design, he's stealing John's look...if he grows his hair out, there again he's trying to be like his dad.
The comparisons will never die. Sean has more of a quirky and artsy personality, like his dad, so he tries to be a little different. I don't think there's a way to be too fashion-forward in this day and age. So many of the most fashionable icons of modern times are simply twisting classic looks of the past. The fact that Sean will wear a feather in his cap or a bow tie is pretty edgy, but yeah... not revolutionizing fashion.
Anyways, by "tasteless" are you referring to that picture of him and Charlotte creating their own version of the famous "Rolling Stone" cover? Because then YEAH I would agree. However, other than that, I don't really find anything else Sean has done, fashion-wise, tasteless. No matter what the guy can't escape comparisons. So maybe he's learned to just embrace them?

'66 was a magical year for Beatles fashion in general, but especially John:

That red suit was so fly.
I really like the experimenting with different styles during this period of time for John. I understand that their are 'iconic' looks associated with him, but I don't know if enough focus is placed on how cool this guy looked in 66'.

I love John in that reddish-orange suit. Omg, sooooooooo gorgeous. And the shoes. I love the entire combination.
And that striped jacket. He was so awesome.

You know why John had such great personal style? Because 99% of style is attitude!
And he was an original!

Now I am on a mission to find outfits John wore that would probably never be pulled off by most, but he made look effortlessly stylish...

Okay, here is one that is much-maligned. But I think John rocked it. It may be a bit dated (you really have to have been there in the mid-'70s to fully get it), but I think it's a cool and cheeky way for a rock star to dress for a formal occasion. The Elvis pin makes it a classic.

OMG I love that one Maia! It's not one of my favorite looks of his, but look how completely cool he looks. He has SO much swag. Yeah, I said "has" because John is STILL bringing it. He could make a paper bag look sexy. Must find more!!!
