I love all the tribute songs for John. "Here Today" and "All Those Years Ago" are wonderful "quotes," if you will. If I could remember the lyrics to Elton John's "Empty Garden", I'd post them on here. Anyone know them?

Here you go...

Empty Garden (John, Taupin)
What happened here?
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there...
Who lived here?
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
But now it all looks strange, it's funny how one insect can damage so much grain.
Amd what's it for?
This little empty garden by the brownstone door, and in the cracks along the sidewalk, nothing grows no more.
Who lived here?
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed, we're crippled and we're dazed.
A gardener like that one, no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh, and I've been calling Oh, 'hey hey Johnny'!Can't you come out to play?

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if he could only hear.
Who lived there?
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot,who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls, we hear, we hear your name.

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh, and I've been calling Oh, 'hey hey Johnny'! Can't you come out to play?
Johnny can't you come out to play?
Johnny in your empty garden

Default Quotes about John...

You know, in honor of what would have been John's 62nd birthday, I kind of found some quotes made about him from different sources. I thought it would be nice to post them so everyone could see. If you have any, go right ahead...

“John Lennon was brilliant, so gifted, so giving. He was the Bach, Beethoven, the Rachmaninoff of our time.” ~ Sid Bernstein

“As to why people were drawn to Lennon, it’s an indefinable gift. Some people really have that certain charisma or magnetism and people are drawn to it. And there’s not that many on the planet, to be honest with you, like that. But he was one of them. It’s inexplicable.” ~ Len Garry (school friend)

“John was rough and sweet and gentle all together.” ~ Astrid Kircherr

“He was so talented he would have succeeded in whatever he chose to do. The world was his oyster.” ~ Cynthia Lennon

"I was a big fan of John's. I always felt he had the biggest heart and he wasn't the cynic that people thought. He had the biggest heart and he was the fastest. He was in and out. While we were still getting in he was out and on to the next round."~ Ringo Starr

"He saw that we are not just in the material world; he saw beyond death, that this life is just a little play that is going on. And he understood that."~ George Harrison

John was a great talent. He was great to be around, very quick-witted and a very lovely soul...I was a bit of a John fan. I think we all were."~ Paul McCartney

"People ask me,'Do you feel like he's still around?' And he is, man. He's alive in his music, in my life. Sometimes I walk into a store and hear him singing...and I feel like that's him talking to me."~ Sean Lennon

"Dad, wherever you are, may your light shine as long as we do!"~ Julian Lennon

"When you say ‘vindication’ the thing that comes to mind is John. I don’t feel that he is vindicated yet. And I am very sure that I would like to see that happen." ~Yoko Ono

lennon4, here's the answer to your question: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...84924?v=glance

I also have the lyrics to All Those Years Ago, for anyone who wants to read them...

All Those Years Ago (Harrison)

I'm shouting all about love
While they treated you like a dog
When you were the one who had made it so clear all those years ago.
I'm talking all about how to give.
They don't act with much honesty
But you point the way to the truth when you say "All you need is love,"

CHORUS:
Living with good and bad
I always looked up to you
Now we're left cold and sad
By someone the devil's best friend
Someone who offended all

We're living in a bad dream
They've forgotten all about mankind
And you were the one they backed up to the wall all those years ago.
You were the one who imagined it all
All those years ago
All those years ago
All those years ago

Deep in the darkest night
I send out a prayer to you
Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of lies
And all else that we despised

They've forgotten all about God
He's the only reason we exist
Yet you were the one that they said was so weird all those years ago
You said it all though not many had ears
All those years ago
You had control of our smiles and our tears
All those years ago...
All those years ago...
All those years ago...

Default Re: Quotes about John...

And here's the lyrics to "Here Today".

Here Today

And if I said I really knew you well
What would your answer be
If you were here today?
Ooh, ooh, ooh, here today.

Well, knowing you, you'd probably laugh and say
That we were worlds apart,
If you were here today.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, here today.

But as for me, I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, I love you, ooh.

What about the time we met?
(What about the time?)
Well, I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get.
Didn't understand a thing,
But we could always sing.

What about the night we cried?
(What about the night?)
Because there wasn't any reason left to keep it all inside.
Never understood a word,
But you were always there with a smile.

And if I say I really loved you
And was glad you came along,
Then you were here today.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, for you were in my song.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, here today.

I don't know if you guys ever heard of Andrew Loog Oldham, but he founded and managed the Rolling Stones back in the 60s.Legendary guy. Worked with a bunch of different people. There's a book out by him, apparently, and he discussed John in there, so I thought I would post what was said about dear John. You know, because it corresponds with this thread and I'm off today.Incidentally, I never knew just how enigmatic John was...

"John was so very attuned to the notion that if the music business was bollocks, it would be his bollocks, and so you never lied to Johnny Lennon. He was very fast with an opinion (an approach I was no stranger to) and it scared a lot of those he wished to scare. 'I'm looking through you' was
what John Lennon did - he invited you to walk on eggshells..."

"...In John's highly sensitive presence you knew exactly who you were and
that is quite a gift to be hauling around..."

"I don't know what Paul was like behind closed doors with his joint rolled and his carpet slippers on...John would roll the joint and watch you smoke it, wear cowboy boots to bed and carpet slippers to meet the Queen - any of them. He watched where life and the music took you, and if you were
standing in clear present time he applauded you..."

"He dared you to have airs and to be stupid; he was always hungry for a fool. He'd ask you a question and watch you contemplate, edit, and realise the futility of a less-than-total-truth answer, and this led to a rarity in the air not often breathed - a truth-only encounter. One strike and you were down with a barrage of venom, a lewd adjectival spew that many a wit and playwright would wish upon his page."

"Being with Johnny Lennon was like a verbal exposition of the famous chicken-race sequence between James Dean and Corey Allen in Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without A Cause, or the Russian-roulette sequence in Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter."

Real strange wording, huh? Guy must have read up on his Dickens.

Default Re: Quotes about John...

I also have some quotes here from John's close friend Harry Nilsson, who was a fabulous (believe me) singer and great songwriter, totally crazy guy (I mean that), but very talented. He met all the Beatles and remained especially close to Ringo and John. Sadly, he died a few years back, but here are some things he did say about his old pal in Rolling Stone magazine before that happened:

"He didn't like vulnerability, yet he was one of the most vulnerable men in the world. It took a lot for him to trust, and when he did you had it from him."

"...I always dug his humor. He was one of the great comedians. There are only two or three people who can make me laugh involuntarily--Ringo, Albert Brooks, and John."

"He spoke the way James Joyce wrote. And to me he was the Beatles. He was always the spark. In a late wee-hour-of-the-morning talk, he once told me: 'I'm just like everybody else, Harry, I fell for Paul's looks. George knew more chords, so he was in. And Ringo, he's just Ringo.'"

"What kind of effect did he have? Enough to change the world. He was the most amazing man ever, I'm very glad to have known John, I'm glad I decided to get on board that one."

My quotes are only from Yoko. I thought they were nice.

“He was my husband. He was my lover. He was my friend. He was my partner.
And he was an old soldier that fought with me.”

“He tried to be a good power for the world, and he was. He gave encouragement, inspiration and dreams to people regardless of their race, creed and gender. For me, he was the other half of the sky. We were in love with each other like the most vehement of lovers to the last moment."

“He had the biggest heart that I know.”

"The only way you can better John is by copying him exactly"

[For John]"A long time ago I said there is a wind that never dies -- I did not know that wind was you".
