Thumbs up North Korea qualify for 2010 World Cup

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ls/8106203.stm

The international pariah that is North Korea will be at next year's World Cup in South Africa. This is a real turn-up for the books. North Korea were last at the World Cup in 1966 when it was hosted by England.

The British government didn't recognise North Korea, so ministers and officials schemed to reduce the level of exposure that the Koreans would receive, consigning them to play their group games in the North-East city of Middlesbrough and fixing it so that national anthems were only played in the opening game and the final. Yet famously the North Koreans upset the odds, by beating Italy with a goal by Pak Do Ik and going 3-0 up against Portugal in the quarter-finals before losing 5-3. The Middlesbrough crowd took the team to their hearts, which was one in the eye for the scheming British officials.

I wonder if they can spring a surprise in South Africa. Imagine a group containing North Korea, England, USA and Northern Ireland. That would really be something.

There's nothing a well directed nuclear bomb can't fix!

I like these Confederations Cup games. Have seen a few, always partly, and it is good fun to watch.

North Korea going through is cool, but not specific I think.

Seen the first half of Spain-New Zealand this week?

And about the country itself, ok so it has a bit less nuclear weapons than the US have available at any minute, but they do some vocal threatening about it which worries a few, mostly the nation which holds most nuclear.

N Korea and South Korea are better football teams than England and the USA!!

We can have 1000's of nuclear weapons to destroy the planet many times over, so we might as well let Korea have some, it makes no difference in the end.

Man is a very nasty animal.

Are we going to be able to watch the World Cup North Korea games on TV, or will they be secret?

I always have felt that North Korea were a little full of shit and have never really been a threat. A little nutter who is an alcoholic and loves attention running a country into the ground

I agree.

It's just that it seems everytime I hear about NK, they're making some paranoid threat to someone (usually the U.S.) with some sort of "retaliation".

Can't wait for the World Cup, I hope Ecuador makes it, even if they do suck.

Well maybe N Korea will broaden their horizens in addition to soccer and launch one their Nukes at another innocent country, they launched close to Japan with their last missle

I guess the US should not be a little nervous after loosing 1000's(not just all US born citizens, all nations were represented) to other terrorists just a few short years ago Pretty rich when it was not in YOUR backyard!!

I believe we helped to rebuild Europe and Japan after WWII? I'd say there are
a few humanitarians descended from the greatest generation!

Screw the crazies in N Korea! I am sorry for their oppressed citizens!

Koreas are also joined by a small Slovenia who beat the giants and strong favorites Russia.

Dajmo Slovenci!

Is anyone from links planning to go to South Africa? I'll almost certainly go!
