Default SHHHH......Do Not Repeat......

Well I guess you can repeat it because they announced the top five on this mornings 'Today Show'. This friday 'Rolling Stone Magazine' will start selling a special issue 'The Top 100 Beatles Songs'. It will have loads of facts about each song.
Here are the top five;
5. In My Life
4. Yesterday
3. Strawberry Fields
2. I Want To Hold Your Hand
1. A Day In The Life
Discuss.......

I don't think I'd place "I Want to Hold Your Hand" so high, so I'm interested to read the reasoning. Maybe it's the historical significance. (I'd put "In My Life" at second.) Otherwise, hard for me to argue with any of those.

There's going to be a show on the Ovation Channel about that very thing, the historical and cultural significance of the song I Wanna Hold Your Hand. I believe it's Wednesday at midnight. The show is called Impact! Just a head's up!

I think that's a really well-made list. A tough challenge, but I'll support the choices.

I kind of agree with Aeolian about IWTHYH... not in my personal Top Ten, but I agree that it should be very high up on a Beatles greatest list because it truly was a groundbreaker... in the US, at least.

A few months back, I asked my dad (he's 78) to name any Beatles song. Immediately he came up with IWTHYH. I asked him to name another and he couldn't! (When I asked him to name the boys, he shouted out, "Ringo!") To a certain generation, the Ed Sullivan Show is the photo of the Beatles that they have in their minds...

Well, guess what I saw this afternoon when I popped into the grocery store for a loaf of bread, shoelaces and contact solution?!

Of course, my 15-year-old daughter instantly pounced on it and is devouring it right now. (Before you engrave my name on that Bad Mother trophy, please know that she is caught up on her homework.) I did get a chance to thumb through it, and in some cases I really think the editors were up in the night, but it's a lot of fun all the same. It also includes that essay by Elvis Costello making the case for the Beatles as the greatest musical ensemble in history (you've all probably read that one already), and it's jam-packed with lovely photos.

I don't know if I should get into too many specifics before everyone has a chance to read it, but I will just say I thought they could have shown Ringo some love. Say what you will about "Octopus's Garden," I find it completely charming -- it's so happy and peaceful and it never fails to put a big smile on my face -- and in my opinion, there is NO WAY "Yes It Is" or "Hello Goodbye" is a better song!

I love that your daughter is just as big of a Beatles fan, Aeolian!

I think that's a pretty good list... but, again, how do you define the BEST songs? Technically? Lyrically? Groundbreaking? It really is a personal choice as well...

So do I, Aeolian! You have taught her well and exposed her to culture.

Who's her favorite Beatle?

JUST made my daddy buy it for me today, haha. I showed it to all my Beatle friends and they had mini-strokes. My dad and I thumbed through it and he sang a line from almost every song that was listed, haha. He was very upset Blackbird wasn't higher up.

A Paul man! I love "Blackbird" and I'm surprised it wasn't a contender.

I went to the CVS last week and spotted a few issues left. Unfortunately I didn't have enough money to buy it...so I hid it behind a few health magazines (because as far as I'm concerned nobody picks those up XD) in hopes that it would be there when I had enough money on me to buy it. Went back Wednesday, and there it was, untouched (and so were the health magazines hiding it! LOL).

I had just enough to buy it, and I think it's a well put-together list, considering how hard picking my top 10, let alone 100, songs would be. In terms of personal favorites, I think it could use a few tweaks, but all of them were on the list so it was fine with me! It was great reading about all the songs, and the pictures are ones that I've never seen before, so that was a plus :D

Didn't it say on iTunes that "Here Comes the Sun" was #1 and I think "Blackbird" was #2?
