I have asked FP to close the first thread as its getting a bit long, but still plenty Dylan to talk about!! New album coming, last one only out a few months ago, yet another European Tour about to kick off....

It must be a holiday, there's nobody around
She studies me closely as I sit down
She got a pretty face and long white shiny legs
I said "tell me what I want"
She says, "You probably want, hard boiled eggs?"

I say "That's right, bring me some"
She says "We aint got any, you picked the wrong time to come"
Then she says, "I know you're an artist, draw a picture of me!"
I say, "I would if I could, but,
I don't do sketches from memory."

"Well", she says, "I'm right here in front of you, or haven't you looked?"
I say," all right, I know, but I don't have my drawing book!"
She gives me a napkin, she says, "you can do it on that"
I say, "yes I could but,
I don't know where my pencil is at!"

She pulls one out from behind her ear
She says "all right now, go ahead, draw me, I'm standing right here"
I make a few lines, and I show it for her to see
Well she takes a napkin and throws it back
And says "that don't look a thing like me!"

I said, "Oh, kind miss, it most certainly does"
She says, "you must be jokin.'" I say, "I wish I was!"
Then she says, "you don't read women authors, do you?"
Least that's what I think I hear her say,
"Well", I say, "how would you know and what would it matter anyway?"

"Well", she says, "you just don't seem like you do!"
I said, "you're way wrong."
She says, "which ones have you read then?" I say, "I read Erica Jong!"
She goes away for a minute and I slide up out of my chair
I step outside back to the busy street, but nobody's going anywhere

Way up in the border country, far from the towns
With the twang of the arrow and a snap of the bow

Every day is the same thing out the door

I've loved this song since i first heard it on the Time Out Of Mind album. This live version is slowed down from the original.

Dylan always has interesting lyrics.

I always considered Dylan more of a poet than songwriter myself. His songs are good, yet some of his lyrics are outstanding! Of course, as is the case regarding all artist with a huge production, not everything he's done is topnotch. How could it be?

I haven't even taken the Tell Tale Signs one out of my car's CD player yet. I need to check back in with Expecting Rain.com apparently.

There are those who can get to the point in a few lines, and there is Dylan. But at best I get drawn in into his story telling, like the story of the hurricane. One of my favourite Dylan songs.

I'm listening to Billy Joe Shaver/And I'm reading James Joyce/Some people tell me I got the blood of the land in my voice," Bob Dylan sings in a leathery growl, capturing the essence of his forthcoming studio album - raw-country love songs, sly wordplay and the wounded state of the nation - in "I Feel a Change Coming On," one of the record's 10 new originals.

Set for late April,the as-yet-untitled album arrives a few months after Dylan's outtakes collection Tell Tale Signs and it "came as a surprise," says a source close to Dylan's camp. Last year, filmmaker Olivier Dahan, who directed the 2007 Edith Piaf biopic, La Vie en Rose, approached Dylan about writing songs for his next feature. Dylan responded with "Life Is Hard," a bleak ballad with mandolin, pedal steel and him singing in a dark, crystal clear voice, "The evening winds are still/I've lost the way and will." (The song appears in the film My Own Love Song, starring Renee Zellweger.)

Inspired, Dylan kept writing and recording songs with his road band and guests, with Los Lobos' David Hidalgo rumored on the accordion. Dylan produce the album under his usual pseudonym, Jack Frost.
The disc has the live-in-the-studio feel of Dylan's last two studio records, 2001's Love & Theft and 2006's Modern Times, but with the seductive border-cafe feel (courtesy of the accordion on every track) and an emphasis on struggling-love songs. The effect - in the opening shuffle, "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'," the Texas-dance-hall jump of "If You Ever Go To Houston" and the waltz "This Dream of You" - is a gnarly turn on early-1970's records like New Morning and Planet Waves.

Dylan makes references to the national chaos, as on the viciously funny slow blues "My Wife's Home Town" ("State gone broke, the county's dry/Don't me lookin' at me with that evil eye"), culminating in the deceptive rolling rock of "It's All Good." Against East L.A. accordion and a snake's nest of guitars, Dylan tells you how bad things are - "Brick by brick they tear you down/A teacup of water is enough to drown" - then ices each verse with the title line, a pithy shot of sneering irony and calming promise. "You would never expect the record after Modern Times to sound like this", the source says. "Bob takes all of those disparate elements you hear and puts them into a track. But you can't put your finger on it - 'It sounds exactly like that.' That's why he's so original."

He is definitely one of my favourite artists. And I do think he is one of the great poets/songwriters/artists of our time. I don't think he's perfect or that everything he's ever done is amazing, but he is clearly talented/important enough NOT to be considered over-rated.

My favourite Dylan song is "Mr. Tambourine Man", mostly because the lyrics blow me away every damn time. Especially considering how young he was!
Other favourites include "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "One More Cup Of Coffee".... My favourite album of his is probably Desire; I love the sound.

I cannot think of any song at the moment that I "can't stand", but there are some that I don't particularly care for. But sometimes I feel overwhelmed because his body of work is so vast that I feel I'll never be "properly aquainted with" every one of his songs, know what I mean?

Do I like his singing because of or despite of his voice, heh.... I think both, if that makes sense? I LOVE his voice but I don't know if I love it for the voice itself or if I love it because it's so BOB, you know, and I love BOB? It's an interesting voice, anyway.

Now, on him as a live artist..
I've seen him in concert once, last spring. That was a stadium concert. A lot of people were not satisfied with that show, because that kind of arena generally calls for more of a party/singalong factor... But as we know, Dylan's not like that. He's not one for trying to charm the crowd by being all cute and chatty and only play hits. If you expect two hours of "WOOO HOOO!!! Yeeeaaahhh how does it FEEEEEL!!!" then you will be disappointed. I for one had a great time because I was pretty close to the stage (HE WAS RIGHT THERE, knowwhatImean?) and I was hanging with folks who were big fans and like me actually KNEW all the songs he played. So, if you're a fan, going to a concert can be a great experience, but... I daresay it's easier to "get to know him" through listening to his albums.

Mari, I can see what you mean.

I never really was such a fan of Bob and I was not in to poetry till a few years back, but I saw him Live on stage 2 years ago and even when he had his back to the audience most of the time..it was Bob... and I was so happy to 'be there'.

Same goes for Leonard Cohen who I am "meeting" now. He also is a poet and does not have a great voice but so many singers who had a 'singing voice' never interested me..
