Default John recording of ‘Back Off Boogaloo’?

I recall a local Beatles radio show playing a recording by John of “Back Off Boogaloo,” the song which was made a hit by Ringo. Not being familiar with the Beatles’ solo work, I thought that John’s recording was a demo and that he wrote the song. So, I’m surprised to learn that Ringo was the song’s composer. However, I’ve tried to look up John’s recording on the Internet but can’t find anything.

Am I just imagining a John Lennon recording of “Back Off Boogaloo”? I’d appreciate anyone’s thoughts on the subject.

He never did, that I know of, and he had zero involvement with Ringo's (George played on it, not John)

He may have doodled part of of it when fiddling with his guitar, after the fact

Or maybe you're thinking of "I'm the greatest", or "Good night Vienna", or "Cooking (in the kitchen of love)"

... all of which he wrote and gave to Ringo and recorded demos or guide-vocals of, ditto with "Only You", for which he also did a guide-vocal

(the first three are available on the "Lennon Anthology" box-set, hence it's possible that it's one or those that you heard)

Ah hah! I’m confusing “Back Off Boogaloo” with “I’m the Greatest.” Thank you for your feedback.

Phew, I was actual hoping it would be that and not "What ? ... there's a version of "Back off boogaloo" sung by John out there and I never heard of it ?" !

If you liked that one, then try to find his similar rendition of "Good night Vienna", it's also fun and pretty good, and it's also with Ringo on drums !

The "Cookin' (in the kitchen of love)" one is more of "demo", just John on piano, doodling the lyrics and the sound quality is iffy (never actually released, unlike the other two)

You might also want to look up John's (also on "Lennon Anthology") demo of "Life begins at 40" which he'd offered to Ringo for his planned "Stop and take the time to smell the roses" album, but, due to John's passing, Ringo never recorded it

And, also on "Lennon Anthology" (same, partial, backing track than the final version sung by Ringo)
